As I've read up on the case it does appear that Mrs & Mrs Markowski are pursuing an agenda. Dr. Elias, a recent immigrant from Egypt told the couple that she had no experience with treating lesbians and that their relationship did, indeed, offend Dr. Elias' religious sensibilities. None of that is in dispute.

Nor is it in dispute, at this point, that the good doctor refused to treat the Murkowskis.

What's going on here at this point is a battle of wits over who has more of a right to be offended.

I'm siding with the doctor as 1) she was honest about her feelings and 2) she did not refuse to treat a patient.

I'm also going to throw down with Health Canada for hiring Muslims and then expecting them not to be Muslims when they come to work. How is that fair? Are lesbians not allowed to be lesbians when they go to work? Of course not.

The Lakewood Medical Center employs Dr Elias, not Health Canada. (Is there a Health Canada?) She may work for wages for the center, or have her own billing number and just pay the center rent etc - I don't know.

Here's what Dr Elias said: Elias told the Free Press that she had no experience with lesbians and that gays and lesbians sometimes have "sexual problems" and were more susceptible to disease.

"They get a lot of diseases and infections," Elias told the paper. "I didn't refuse to treat them, I said it's better to find someone who has experience and will take this type of patients. There [are] some doctors who can treat them." Very ignorant of her, since a Lesbian couple would have less likelihood of STD's than a straight couple. This doc needs re-training.

And if you follow up that link, whoooops, it turns out Dr Elias is Christian so I guess this the the fault of "Health Canada" for "hiring Christians and then not expecting them to be Christians when they come to work."

Ironically, you probably are a liberal muslim because, aside from the obvious, I've always managed to get along really well with jihadis, devout muslims, and hard core fundamentalists. The fact that you don't like me and that we share no common ground, in this context, speaks well for you.

Who you going to believe, a blog or a newspaper that quotes her employer? You're going to have to swallow this one Bart unless you can provide clear proof she is indeed Muslim.

And OK, there's a Health Canada, but by far the greatest majority of doctors in Canada are self employed, while most of the rest are employed by a particular province's health ministry. I doubt if Health Canada has many doctors praciticing medicine except maybe to provide services to Native reserves.

The doctor's religion is in dispute in various sources on the net. I'm content to leave it that way. She is, however, Egyptian, and is not accustomed to treating lesbians and even if she's an Egyptian Christian it's still offensive to her religious sensibilities the concept of lesbianism.

It's still unfair to such a person to recruit her to work in Canada and expect her to be instantly conversant in political correctness.

Wouldn't be the first time a reporter made stuff up. Still, even if it's the case that the doctor is a Christian she's got a right to her opinions and beliefs. Hate to say, but her comments about the lesbian couple perhaps needing a doctor more familiar with their particular needs and who was more sympathetic to them doesn't seem all that bad to me. The alternative would be for the doctor to secretly loathe them and give them substandard care instead of sacrificing her career.

Oddly, had Dr. Elias done exactly that no one would be the wiser.
