DrCaleb DrCaleb: BartSimpson BartSimpson: I appreciate what the pastor is saying. Yoga is as much a religious practice as it is an exercise regimen. Yoga is not a religious practice. To Extremists it is. Throw in Dancing, toss in Art with Dragons, and a bunch of other shit no sane person finds anything related to Religion/Spirituality. There's a significant portion of Evangelicals to whom everything has Spiritual/Religious connotations. Lose you Job? It's Satan! Don't die from drinking tap water? It's Jesus! Hallelujah!!! Despite the objections by some in this thread regarding the idea, these people are more dangerous than the Taliban.

Once they start killing people I'll put them on the same level as the Taliban but as for being more dangerous? I don't see how unless they acquire nukes.

Once they start killing people I'll put them on the same level as the Taliban but as for being more dangerous? I don't see how unless they acquire nukes. Blind faith is far more dangerous. Once Bart looks at his statement, and "relates worship of a deity" to Yoga, he'll then be able to apply it to 'boxing', 'swimming' and 'ping pong'. Or, he'll see the error in his statement and start back down the moderate side of the street. The crusades and the inquisition killed far more people than any nuclear weapons. And it starts because of those who won't stand up to the bullies. Yoga is easy to pick on, the extremists see it an activity frequented by the 'hippies' who won't fight back. But they ignore that there is no single 'religion' practised by people who choose yoga as part of their healthy life, any more than there is by those practising Tai Chi or Karate.

Many martial arts and other eastern practices have religious origins and to some degree still carry strong religious connotations. While I think the pastor is failing to properly separate the healthy action from its background, it does have some justification.
At least he hasn't issued an intifada against yoga practioners. If you don't like it, you don't have to belong to his church.

Some pastor speaking from his soap box does not equal a bunch of savages who behead people for shits and giggles and then plow airplanes into skyscrapers as a act of worship and devotion. Really, now that Derby's gone are you taking up the mantle of resident Christian hater?

They haven't killed yet(ignoring a few incidents), but they lie in wait for the opportunity.

That's quite a stretch even for you.

Nah, the Batshitism festered for Centuries before they got around to making it a Political Movement and ultimately the Law. By all means, enjoy your Taliban while they're just people making stupid comments. Don't ignore or underestimate their danger though.

BartSimpson BartSimpson: How does advising Christians not to practice yoga translate into a murder plot? If a good Christian fails to drop their yoga classes and is murdered in the ensuing drama, then it is. It really depends how seriously this particular congregation takes the holy guidance this particular minister hands out.

The Taliban had batshit theological ideas that found great success because they just happened to coincide with batshit cultural ideas in the host countries. Not so in the US, Sand. These people will be rightfully laughed at by the 300 million plus sane people down south.

The crusades were started as a response to "bullies". The Pope didn't just get the idea of going on a crusade, he issued the call after the Byzantine Empire called for help cause they were unable to turn the tide on Muslims invaders. From 622 to 750 AD Muslims went on an ass kicking campaign that saw the Muslim invaders make it all the way into modern day France and were only stopped at the Battle of Tours. Again in 1071 to 1683 AD the Muslims decide to take another crack at Europe. Needless to say Christian were a little pissed about being on the receiving end of another beating after having already lost their holy land. So they did what any person does when faced with destruction, they fought back. As for the Inquisition yea that whole thing was just wrong.

The very concept of say what I do or I torture you eternally makes almost anything justifiable. Even banning a practice with many benefits without realizing what the whole is. (for those who think of hell as a separation from god how could an omniscient being create something that is not of himself? If the universe is a part of god then to claim something lies outside of all that exists is to claim nonexistence....anyway)
I can say as a practitioner of karate that the spiritual side of the art is very much been translated as a state of mind rather then any given set of morals. The most "ethical" thing I have ever heard a karate sensei preach is that humility is the best thing you can have when you learn these arts as humility of knowing you can hurt a person but choose not to gives you the calm to control a situation internally without undue action.
Indeed this is akin to saying "It is imperative you control yourself since you can so easily harm another or you could wind up in very big trouble". This is basic knowledge that all parents impart to their kids.
Most of the "spiritual" side of athletic practices have more to do with keeping ones mind in good shape with ones body rather then "what" to think or do.
I can totally call this pastor an overactive foolish idiot and I openly do so.
I think Pseudonym is on the right track but the fact that he fails to see that his justification is cherry picking from the whole he fails to justify anything.
