Warning labels won't help.

I think each pack of cigarettes should be electrified/wrapped in barbed/razor wire, so that every time someone is stupid enough to buy a pack, they'll get a shot of pain. Then everyone but the masochists would quit!

Excellent idea Boots. R=UP I'll get right behind that idea,as long as the same packaging methods are applied to all ALCOHOL BEVERAGES including a glass of wine with dinner!

When a glass of wine directly affects the health those nearby, then fine. From your POV, I could see doing it for the big bottles of hard liquor and flats of beer though (maybe to help discourage binge drinking).

But really, it's fine by me, I don't smoke and hardly ever drink...

Check out the stats on the overall societal problems resultant smoking vs alcohol consumption.

This sort of thing stopped being an issue years ago. There are far more important issues to address than adding yet another warning label on cigarettes. It is a waste of time and money.

Last I checked, smoking was key factor in most of the top causes of death in Canada. A couple thousand deaths from alcohol poisoning and drunk driving, while both tragic and terrible, are a drop in the bucket compared to the tens of thousands (certain cancers, heart attacks, strokes, etc) that smoking kills every year.

You can bitch and moan all you want, but smoking kills far more people than alcohol and costs society far more (monetarily) than alcohol does.

Lets go with bars of chocolate also. Overweight ppl and their drain on the health care system, diabeties ect... We can truly have a healthy society if we apply all these same measures ppl want to do to smokers to chocolate eaters.

Here in Texas they have been slaping on taxes, $1 this last time, like crazy on tobaco. I always here ppl going yeah thats a great idea those smokers are anoying and have so many health issues. When I suggest taxing chocolate at the smae rate we do cigs almost every over weight person gets a very shocked look on their face and shut up. They then wadel off in a huff munching their chocolate bar.

Face it Boots. The only way Yogi will stop calling you a hypocrite is if you kill yourself. (He's got to keep his self-respect somehow.) In an environmentally approved manner, or course.

Drinking causes it's share of problems, absolutely. Lets put big warning labels on booze too, and ban all advertising.

One of the warning labels should say drinking in bars can lead to smokeing. Thats how I got started.

First off, not everyone who eats chocolate is fat, which you imply. Secondly, smoking affects the health of those around them, while junk food really only affects whoever consumes it.

I'm all for taxing junk food, but considering that me eating a chocolate bar next to you causes you zero ill health effects, I'm not too worried about somebody eating one beside me, whereas someone smoking beside me definitely impacts my health.

There have been studies that say that dark chocolate has the same benefits as a glass of wine (but so far nothing arguing daily Baconators is good for you :) ).

Despite that, I'm still for taxing junk food to reflect its true cost to society (too much is definitely bad for one's health). I'd say a 15-25% increase in junk food might help people make smarter decisions when grocery shopping. After all, when a 2 L of Coke costs far less than a 2L of Orange Juice (about half here in Edmonton), there's something wrong IMHO.

I'm all for taxing junk food, the problem comes with the definitions.

Chocolate doesn't do the same thing as wine, but also has anti-oxidants that can reduce blood pressure. But only small amounts are required.

I agree about the Coke thing. If there's a more useless product than carbonated soft drinks, I don't know what it is. I've way reduced drinking them - almost never, really only if there's nothing else available.

'Some of you' are missing the whole point of my posts.
Virtually everyone has a vice!

Mine is smoking, Yours is drinking, His is eating too much chocolate...etc.
But there is that ever-present attitude that 'Your vice is waaay worse than mine'!

Just remember, 'When you are pointing one finger at me, there are three fingers pointing back'!

I dont know if you guys consider this 'self riteous' but i've always enjoyed telling my story how i quit and how much it means to me. I've never pushed or sugeested that someone should quit, but if that is their decision, i've always wished them success.

You'd come across as a lot less self riteous if you'd just quit sacrificing those goats.

wildrosegirl wildrosegirl:
Next - if we're gonna put these big, fat ugly pictures on cigarettes to combat tobacco (more realistically, the chemicals added to it) related diseases, let's go all the way. I want to see all snack foods (chips, crackers, cheezies, etc.), processed meats and cheese, those gawd awful Lunchables, etc., complete with warning labels as well. May cause obesity, heart attack, diabetes, increased cholesterol levels, increased blood pressure, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Please don't give them ideas.

By the way, this is what these temperance folks look like.
