Brenda Brenda: $1: As of yet, I have never had one person tell me they did not like the smell of them. Let me be the first then! I HATE THE SMELL OF CIGARS! Always have, even when I smoked myself well, I usually smoke the lighter leafs (not as mature) so it isn't very strong. But there are some cigars out there that are pretty harsh for sure.

uwish uwish: I used to smoke cigarettes, gave that up years ago. I do now however, enjoy the occasional cigar. As of yet, I have never had one person tell me they did not like the smell of them. I don't smoke them inside, I think it is a big difference between smoking the leaf (ie pipe, and cigar tobacco) and cigarettes. I am not blind, I know 'smoking' in general is not good, but at least there are no burning enhancers, tar, benzine, or any other added chemicals to the leafs I smoke.
Cigars also stink 9i hate that sweet, fruity smell they give off), although I agree that the lack of chemicals in them make them less harsh than cigarettes. I can actually stand to be around a cigar smoker for a fair bit longer than I can cigarette smokers (not that I ever choose to).

Of all tobaccos, pipe tobacco is usually the least offensive. If you're sitting/standing next to a smoker, cracking a real nasty fart usually gets the point across.

It sounds to me more like a drive to keep the homeless out of the parks during daylight hours.
You don't really think the cops are going to go out of their way to hassle you when you bring your kids out for a picnic do you?

except when smokers use a park they force the non smokers to stay clear or hold their breaths vancouver is making the parks for everyone by not having these respectful citezens pushed away from parks and also they dont say that smokers arent allowed in the park they just say they cant smoke in the parks

Finding cigarette butts all over parks and public places(especially beaches), is disgusting.

So if I want to smoke at the park i'm not allowed. I always wonder why those who don't smoke say my smokeing infringes on them yet when smokeing is banned does it not infringe on the smokers. This is outside, exhuast from a car is far worse then that of a cig. Will they ban cars coming to the park next? Better yet bird craping from a tree you are under utterly gross lets ban birds from the parks.

sounds a bit extreme to have a complete ban unless they are citing a fire hazard.
However, courtesy is a big word for smokers, I wish they could at least keep their distance from me.

andyt andyt: Choban Choban: andyt andyt: I don't want to sit next to somebody that's smoking. If they're far enough away that I can't smell it, let em go at it. Unfortunately people are not that considerate, hence the need for regulation. Not that it will be enforced or is all that enforceable anyway. Yah but the same can be said for people that wear too much perfume, or don't shower regularily, do we ban them as well, too much perfume can cause an allergic reaction in some people. A large open public park, someone smoking near you who won't move, simple solution would be for you to take 10 steps upwind and leave it at that (though admittedly you shouldn't have to) Personaaly my only issue with smokers in public spaces is the butts all over the ground. Exactly, I shouldn't have to move if I was there first. The law at least is an attempt to address that. Don't get me started on butts. Smokers are pigs. People who ride bicycles are hypocritical assholes!

If you idle your car in the middle of the park next to where people are trying to have a picnic, you bet you'd get some flack for it. It's the concentration that matters. That's why close-up, cigarette smoke is far more unhealthy and annoying than car exhaust diluted over the whole airshed. Banning smoking does in infringe on somkers, but it does them no harm. Do you support having junkies shoot up next to your family in the park - that infringes on them.

uwish uwish: but this is in a presumably large park, there is lots of space, I think it is getting pretty disturbing how much the government 'knows what's best' for us sheeple.
Where do you live, podunkville? This Vancouver, there are many parks, large and small. They have these little beings running around in them called children. You really feel good blowing your smoke at them? And if not them, why subject adults to your smoke when they have no desire to partake. If smokers were more courteous and wouldn't smoke near people who don't then maybe it wouldn't come to this. Althoug, as the article says, cigarette butts are also a huge problem, and smokers seem to have no care about strewing them everywhere. So, the reason this is going thru is because the majority of people appreciated the parksboard knowing what's best for sheeple. The ones that want to be healthy, rather than rugged individualists coughing out their lung tissue.
