With all due fairness, she has trouble getting Anglo culture in Canada at times. Japanese specifically and east Asian mores in general, are bizarre to outsiders. So it's easy to understand the confusion.

A guy collets dolls/toys, lives with his mom, works, and fills up her house with his collection. She gets pissed and throws out the dolls only to find out they were worth $60,000 or up. Guy goes nuts burns down the house and we call him a Crazy.

A guy collets dolls/toys, lives with his mom, works, and fills up her house with his collection. Mom gets pissed and makes him SELL the collection he makes over $60,000. Guy is thought to go nuts because he now does not have his collection and burns down moms house, we call him eccentric.

Poor people are crazy rich people are eccentric.

So the moral of this story is IF your son lives with you and collect dolls, baseball cards, comic books ect... be wise dont throw them out and by all means keep him away from the matches.

My final word on this and I apologize for the incorrect info earlier. It wasn't him and his mum. And it was the actual family home. The residents were him, his mum, grandmother and younger brother.

I did find out the 200-300 boxes (the number from Japanese news articles) he owned, were in his room only.

The suicide attempt I will admit is disturbing but it's an all too common and sad situation in Japan. If I remember correctly, a friend told me there was a sign at one subway station asking people who planned to kill themselves to please do so at night when there were less people to disturb. My friend's friend took his own life at night in a park in Tokyo. He placed a plastic bag over his head and tied it off. They found him the next morning.

Now the collecting obsession, that is also not uncommon. Businesses cater to the Otaku or fan by releasing products not only for children but for adults too. It's a huge industry and there is even a whole district with cafes and such which caters to fans. And as I sold such collectables, Japanese toys and collectables are in many ways vastly superior to our own. Only recently have North American industries realized how much potential there is. I'm predicting that by the next generation you will see them catching up with Japan in marketing, design and products.
