CommanderSock CommanderSock:
Once again you fail to grasp the issue in question.
In India (which is what this article is pertaining to), it's difficult to get a job or move up in a career with dark skin. So skin whitening treatment has become the de facto social mobility tool, which naturally has sparked outrage and controversy, especially among the lower dark skin castes.
Now, people can lighten their profiles on facebook so they can get more friends.
This is more critical of the state of the situation in India, rather than just a facebook photo editing tool.
This isn't simply about the cosmetic aspect of skin tone modification, it's about the social implications of it.
In Canada having a tan or pasty skin won't change the way people perceive you, but in India, China and other Asian countries, skin tone absolutely matters on a social and work oriented level. It will make the difference between a promotion, and perpetual dead end work.
In India, what do you mean by "dark" skin? As in somebody whos Black? Because they are all pretty much fairly dark skinned there or "brown". So I don't understand how having "light" skin would effect there social life or carrer options.
There is massive variation of skin color in India. Some are white (blue eyes the whole package) while others are dark as sub saharan Africans.
People from certain parts of northern India are just as white as the Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and southern Germans.
Then on the other extreme end are tamils.
