Lemmy Lemmy:
Where do you draw the line? Do you really think that paying LCBO employees $18/hr is right? Of course, we'd all like everyone to make a million dollars a year, but at some point, the wage rate needs to be linked to the economic value of the work. I'm sorry that some poor sod hasn't the skills to earn more than minimum wage, but that's life. How can it be justified to pay somebody $18 an hour to stock shelves and punch the cash register at the LCBO while the checkout girl at the Foodway makes $10 for doing the same job (actually, the checkout girl at the Foodway's likely working a lot harder)?
Alcohol is MASSIVELY taxed. We pay that premium as consumers. But we're being doubly fucked when we're paying in excess of 100% excise taxes on a product AND we're paying the guy selling it to us, out of government dollars, double the market wage rate for that task.
Yes.
Reductio ad absurdum doesn't really help you make your argument.
How can it be justified to pay the checkout girl $10? She should get a living wage too.
Market wage rates are bullshit. As long as we keep importing people desperate to work for any wage, wages will of course be lower in the market. Stop importing people, and magically wages will rise. If it's about market wages, why not pay people here what they make in Asia - I mean those poor suckers are too stupid to deserve anymore anyway, right?
