http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naser_Makarem_Shirazi

This is a highly educated political and religious leader, not some fringe nutbag. His fatwa will be respected because he is respected for his learning, his achievements, and his personal sacrifices during the Islamic Revolution.

Writing him off instead of coming to grips with the fact that millions of people will listen to his words is a strategic error.

I wonder how this guy's fatwa's comparet to Osama Bin Laden's fatwa's?

Does it matter if it comes from as Islamic Scholar has more weight than an "Islamic warrior"?

The Iranian dude is shia. I don't if Osama Bin Laden is Shia or Sunni.

The Fatwa guy's right though. There does seem to be a tradition of dog-hate in the holy writings of Islam. Sounds like Mohammed wasn't crazy about cats either.

OK, so here's a problem. I'm Googling about trying to find info on this alleged Muslim dog-hate. I found something at YouTube, but it's from an obvious hater of what he calls Islamo-fascists, and it would seem a dog-lover. Nevertheless some of his allegations appear based on fact. Here's an example.

Muslim cab drivers ban seeing eye dogs based on faith

Here's the vid for what it is though...

I have an Iranian neighbour and he loves my dog. However, please don't let that interfere with "Those Wacky Iranians" propaganda campaign

Dog's are 99.9% cleaner then most Muslims I have had the smelly displeasure of working with.

My mom has a lot of muslim co-workers at work, some who wear the hijab and some who don't. She told me there bathroom is a mess, that they take those plastic toilet seat coverings and place it on and she sais they don't sit down on them they balance themselves over it and sometimes miss the toilet doing this balance act. Worse of all, they always leave those plastic coverings on the toilet. There bathroom is a mess she tells me and the Scotiabank janitor is rather tired of it. Even worse of all, most don't eve wash there hands. Yes, all of them being muslim. Some probally immigrants. Welcome to Toronto I guess.

Ah, thank you Hardly and Bacardi--you've now fulfilled two of the necessary preconditions of an effective propagnada campaign. First of all, the leaders of the enemy must be portrayed as insane. (Remember "So-damn insane). Second of all, the rank and file must be portrayed as subhuman (as per your "Muslims aren't like us; they're filthy"). Well done.

Now, to make this a complete propaganda campaign, you have to portary the imminent war as necessary (remember WMD in Iraq--soemthing like that; just cook up some intelligence). You have to convince people they are being attacked. And, of course, you have to denounce the pacifists.

Don't worry, it wont since your anecdote about your neighbour in Canada has no bearing or relevance when it comes to fatwas being issued by top clerics in Iran that don't wont people enjoying dogs as companions because its to "western" like behaviour.

How does one take this guy seriously, how do people take this religion seriously?

The Ayatollah what ever his name is just smoked a little to much cocaine over the weekend and was a bit cranky coming down and getting use to the work week again. We shouldn't be too harsh on the poor fellow. If you had a President(or PM) like Amadinejad you would probably want to get shit faced as often as possible too.

I'm no banner waver for Islam but one lunatic is just that.

I'm wary of militant Islam but I'm also wary of people using our fears to promote other agendas, like the English Defence League are doing in the UK.

What we really need to do is ensure Muslims in our own countries become part of our society instead of being on the outside like I see in England. Muslims who come to the West looking for a better life need to realise that there are aspects to their religion and culture that don't jive well with our values.

We can and should accommodate newcomers but not at the expense of our society. We can't even discuss this stuff openly for fear of being called 'racists' and our politicians are too meek to show some real leadership.

Lack of real discussion just encourages the racists on both sides.
Thank you for that!

Well, let's see. 200 000 000 Shia worldwide. About 100 Ayatollahs. So, let's see...I hate arithmetic...neither are 99.99995% of Shias? Perhaps it is different if we just look at Iran.
