Strange days indeed. Back in the 80's francophones were considered the Rosa Park of their times if they stood up and threw a tantrum when they refused to speak English in a board meeting. They were applauded.

Now a unilingual anglophone in Ottawa can't even sort mail for their country unless they speak French.

To exclude the majority group from working for their own government just to make francophones feel better is just asinine.

This is were your pendulumn has swung a little to far to the left for me Mac.

I guess I think too much like an American you know common sense and all.

Nobody is excluding anybody. The Feds are just expecting certain competencies in line with their mandate from those that they hire. Knowledge of both official languages is a valued skill that anyone from any background can attain, so this exclusion of anglophones argument is BS.

This literally has nothing to do with being right or left wing in the least.

Newsflash: You're talking to an American. I spent the first 21 years of my life in the US, and I am still fully bilingual. So let's cut the nonsense about anglos being excluded or discriminated against. It's a question of acquiring valuable skills that increase your employability in appropriate sectors. It's like any other job market. You can't expect to be an architect if you never paid attention in geometry class.
