Most serial killers/psychopaths tend to be in the upper percentile range of IQs. When you prey on humans you need that extra edge, so perhaps they are proving to themselves and others that they are smarter by engaging in this challenge/ behaviour. As for their socioeconomic status, most are middle classed or well to do.
