I keep reposting this because I'm very serious. If I have to pay a carbon tax on my heating bill, I'm going to start burning firewood instead.

What makes you think wood would be exempt from such a tax?

That's easy, go in the woods, cut it yourself. It's free.

The only thing you need is a chainsaw, preferably a quiet one, so no one notices. Ah, also bring some beer to keep hydrated. And that's it, actually pretty simple.

You're safe for now, but the nanny state is coming for you soon.

Take a peek down to San Fransico, and glimpse the future...

Fireplace fascism in California

Burn wood in the Bay Area, and your neighbors will rat you out and send inspectors to your door who will slap you with a fine. Even on Christmas Day.

Bay Area air pollution inspectors found 47 violators burning wood fires illegally during Christmas Day's Spare the Air alert — which was declared because cold, unhealthful air had been forecast.

Violators get written warnings for a first offense and $400 fines for a second offense.

"We know a lot of people like to burn on this holiday, but it's our duty to protect public health," said Ralph Borrmann, the spokesman.

It demonstrates once again that there is no limit to how intrusive and destructive government can become in the name of protecting from real or imaginary public threats to safety and health.

In Britain they already have garbage cops, and more, new, green cops to kick down doors regarding other supposed offences on the way.

Actually wasn't the Ontario premier trying to sell the idea of warrantless searches of homes for supposed energy violations not too long ago?

The Greencoats are coming! 8O

Maybe I disagree with gasoline taxes. It'd be easy for me to drive up to the gas pumps, fill my truck and drive away without paying. That doesn't make it legal.

All of which underlines the primary reason Americans have a right to keep and bear arms and that is to protect us from our government. See, when the legislature, the courts, and the leadership all are against you then only you are going to hold them accountable for their misdeeds.

I am not so sure about your economics. Let's see my average gas bill to heat my house is less than $100/mo (yes it is higher in winter) and most of that is service and connection fees.

Now we will assume the wood burning fireplace is existing so no cost there. The chain saw is less than $300, but the pick up truck is $50,000. You were going to drink the beer anyways so we will ignore that cost. However because of beer consumption you failed to pay attention to the position of the truck and caused $10,000 of damage when the tree fell on it. To make up for that you overloaded the truck and broke a spring for another $500. Then there was the $50 of gas (plus carbon tax) to go to cut the tree that damaged the truck. I could go on but we are already over $60,000 which would heat my home for 50 years all for not investing in a chain saw to save money. :D
