You're not reading what I wrote.

yeah he has that habit.

If you can tell me that you dont look over at that person talking to you in the other seat or behind you even ONCE then you are simply full of shit, plain and simple. and brenda is right, so you can use hands-free but cant dial, but wait wasn't the point of this law that TALKING was the issue?. if so doesn't the hands-free option contradict the law which required it in the first place? me thinks so

Riiiiiight.

I would like to see ALL provinces enact, and then strictly enforce such a law. There is one county here which has recently done so, but it doesn't apply to provincial roadways within the county. No word yet as to how that is working out.

ditto

As a truck driver I see people sway back and forth in a lane or cross the line.

When I pass they are on the phone, trying to dial or texting.

If the phone call is that important, pull over and talk, otherwise, drive your vehicle.

Talking on Cell Phone as Dangerous as Driving Drunk

ha right , just like you do when you use your CB right? give me a break. I guess you support this law if it covers CB radios as well correct?

Where do you get that from?? Comprehension problem?

The article states that it would still be OK to use hands free devices. Obviously the problem isn't talking, nit wit. You don't talk with your hands do you?

I am picturing you signing into your phone.

In Israel you'll be fined $250 (min/month wage here $1000) for using cellphone without a free hand device. Texting is ban.
You can't die twice. One time is more then enough. But because of your careless driving you could take somebody's life too. It could be child or pregnant woman.... No matter what's the cause of a car accident, your cellphone or passenger, can you take this kind of responsibility ? I know that accident happen but I do my best to prevent it.

AC, seems you only notice the 'red text' so here's some more!

Can't agree with you there B. We all know that talking on a cell phone requires/takes more of our attention than just looking ahead, and driving whilst talking to a passenger, which, in my own experience only requires the occassional glance in their direction, and the obligitory " yup...uhuh...ok... mmmm...lol,...
quite a difference.

I read and understood completely what you have written B. You are splitting hairs! Bottom line is that texting/dialing a cell phone requires, even momentarily, 'eyes off the road' and is an extremely unsafe practice. I'm thinking that it is you and AC who are choosing not to read what I have written inasmuchas I have stated that 'we will never get rid of ALL driver-distractions, but it is within our grasp to control those that we can to the best of 'our' (read society in general) ability.

B.C. would become the seventh province to restrict hand-held cellphone use by drivers if provincial legislation introduced Wednesday is adopted. B.C. Solicitor General Kash Heed has introduced a bill that would prohibit drivers from using cellphones while driving, unless the phones are connected to hands-free devices.

What ever happened to both hands on the wheel 10 and two.. and both eyes on the road? Cell phone use should be banned in cars and owners of dogs should have to harness them in the back seat. Yesterday I seen a women trying to turn a corner but was having problems because she had two poodles on her lap.. not one .. two!
jeeze people are just asking for trouble.

There you go, you get my point.

Unless the phones are connected to hands free devices doesn't make it less distractive. The study posted in this thread confirmed that.

Robair Robair:
What's the difference between dialing a number or scrolling through your contacts and texting?

Well, you shouldn't be scrolling through contacts either. I can only speak for myself, but I can dial a 10 digit number without looking away from the road. I'm familiar enough with a telephone number pad to do that. Texting (and I must confess, I have never texted) requires more visual distraction from the road. You usually push more buttons to text, don't you? You need to look away from the road to text, don't you?

Furthermore, texting is a compulsive behaviour. People who text are CONSTANTLY pre-occupied with texting and checking to see if they've received texts (as if the sky would fall if they didn't read it immediately).

I see a clear difference between making or receiving a phone call behind the wheel and texting behind the wheel. But, I concede I'm no expert.

So why is talking on a cellphone banned and using a radio isn't? Or is it too?
Cops can't call dispatch while their car is in motion because they don't have both hands on the wheel?
The taxi driver can't call in?
You can't call in your miles on a logging road anymore? The risk of doing that is higher than running head-on into someone going the other way?
Couriers and drivers can't be called by dispatch anymore because you have to pick up the mike?

This is like the one drink will kill your unborn baby thing. They say it because some people can't differentiate between talking and TAKING YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD TEXTING. Punish ALL because SOME are stupid.

Edit: Punish ALL because SO GODDAM MANY are that stupid...

So, why can you talk on a cell phone, just not on one you hold in your hand? Because THAT is the issue...
