Yogi Yogi:
Ummm....YES! Same as I pay to register my vehicle to help pay for roadways your registration fees could go towards the same ( and bike lanes). And as well I pay vehicle insurance to cover damages/injuries that I might cause with my vehicle.

Seems that cyclists 'want' but 'want' everyone else to pay for it!

Motorvehicles wear down roads. Bikes don't. I'd be willing to pay as long as the license fee is inline with the costs. So, if my bike license costs $0.15, great, I'm behind it. Any more and it's just another cash grab.

I ride a bike in Saskatoon, the city with the second highest bike commuter rate in Canada. I also drive both a car and a school bus (RUEZ's shortbus, check it out to see him in the back  ) Few problems as a bike rider ( like Brenda said, well planned bike lanes help reduce conflict) and I have never had a problem as a driver. I just wish Saskatoon would spend the cash and finish up its bike path plan. http://www.city.saskatoon.sk.ca/org/municipal_engineering/trails/plan/BicycleFacilityNetworkStudy.pdf They get that finished it will be grand.

How bad does the winter frost beat up your bike trails?

Are you suggesting that we start taxing the cold weather?

Not as bad as the roads are beat up by cars. The worst beat up part of the bike path I usually take is broken up by tree roots? Tax those green bastards

As a member of both groups, I feel for both. When I'm riding my bike, I'm always worried someone won't pay attention and run me over. I also get peeved when I see cyclists ignoring the rules, like blowing through stop signs and not walking their bikes across controlled intersections.

Fortunately, Edmonton has a lots of designated bike routes (essentially double wide sidewalks), so you can travel quite well without riding on the road. As far as I know, there is only one bike lane (on a road) in the whole city on 127 st. Just a few months ago there was an announcement that Edmonton was looking into spending $100 million over the next 10 to develop even more bike paths, which is great.
