You can buy cigarettes in Ontario 18. You can actually possess them and smoke them at any age (in theory.) There's no law on that.

No one thinks it's a good idea to smoke around your kids.

And yet they do anyway.

No one thinks it is a good idea to drive drunk, or to call in your car, or to spank your kids, or to leave your indoor dog outside...

People are just stupid.

For some reason I thought it was 19, probaly thinking of the drinking age. Last year when I was only 18 we just bought a few packs in the US because we didn't know for sure.

Also more popular cigarette brand in America is Marlboro.
Most popular cigarette brand by African Americans is Newport.

I used to be a Marlboro Red smoker, then my friend switched me over to Newports...Im trying to quit.

Driving drunk is agaist the law, and the others are as well in certain areas.

Smoking around your kids in your car is illegal too.

Is there a zero tolerance rule in Canada? Like if you have a beer or two and then drive and get pulled over will get busted...or is there the whole "nothing over BAC of .08"

Which is my point. Weren't you arguing that we don't need a law for this, because of "common sense"? And then you cite other "common sense" things we have laws for too.

calling on your cell is not illegal in bc.
the neighbours dog is outside sometimes, yet they never walk him.
we all spank our kids on the butt sometime, never seen a cop drop by for that all?.

I said those things were illegal in some areas.

We have animal abuse/neglect laws so if the indoor dog is freezing or in danger while outside, there are laws/bylaws to protect it. And yes, I've heard of people being charged with abuse for spanking their child.

Well, in holland calling on your cell in the car is illegal. Does that count?
I've heard of people killing their kids and then be loved by their community anyway, and his thinking of his kids is punishment enough...

This is a commonly misunderstood area of Canadian law.

There is a criminal charge of driving "over 80", as you suggest.

However there is a separate and distinct charge of "driving while impaired" by alcohol.

You can be charged with impaired driving EVEN IF you're not over 80, although that is unusual. All the police need is evidence you were drinking (alcohol on your breath is enough), and there is some evidence your motor skills are impaired, i.e. you made some driving mistakes.

Be careful. Drinking and driving cases are prosecuted here religiously and you will get a criminal record if convicted.

Lily is right. Parents are sometimes charged for "disciplining" their children if the level of force used it arguably extreme. And while those parents may ultimately be acquitted the mere fact they're charged can turn their lives into a living hell.

My complaint is that while smoking around your kids is clearly wrong, I simply wonder if we need to make it explicitly illegal and have the police charge people (even if it's just a traffic ticket, not a criminal charge.) It just seems like the nanny state run amok, and an excuse for even more police intrusion into our daily lives.

I don't know. I don't smoke so I don't particularly care but it does seem like we are constantly making behaviours illegal just to score political points.

You must be 19 to purchase cigarettes in Ontario, but 16 to possess them. So, a parent can legally purchase cigarettes for their 16 year old to smoke.

Now axeman just tells us you have to be 16 to be allowed to smoke.
so why didn't this girl get a ticket for smoking while she was 15?
