$1:
It's not even a deterrent
Who cares about deterrence, it is more about cleaning up and saving money. If it deters one, all the better.

There are plenty of more dangerous and violent criminals to deal with then an old geezer who killed a child almost 30 years ago.
BS
$1:
probably got his o-ring pounded 24/7
So we gave him what he was originally looking for and granted his wish. Some punishment.

It is NOT a tool of revenge.
Revenge? No. Justice? Absolutely.
In the early 70's the polls in Canada showed an 85% support level for the death penalty for those whose undeniably committed murder. Brainwashing children of that era into thinking that this is unacceptable has created a young adult community who do not have the guts to pull the trigger without feeling some sort of sympathy for the murdering perpetrator.
Homolka, Bernardo and many others survive and create expensive, tax supported employment opportunities such as for prison guards, parole officers, parole board members, lawyers, psychologists and boat load of other parasitic vermin who fight tooth and nail to prevent executions in order to save their lucrative professions and in the end waste valuable resources that can actually improve society in regards to much needed services from child welfare to medical research and countless more worthy "causes".
So don't feed me this crap about advanced societies being enlightened and superior for not using capital punishment for we have become undeniably weak.
