Frankly, I couldn't care less if the item costs more than those made in China or not. At least if we buy Canadian, we'll see some of it back in taxes. A purchase from a Canadian company is better than the tax breaks and otehr BS the parties give to their corporate buddies. Wasn't that the big reason we bought the C-17s, because Boeing promised to tender some contracts here?

If there isn't a Canadian option at all, then I could care less where it's made, as long as it's good quality.

There aren't any Canadian Companies that will provide what the military needs. So basically both the Greenies and cons are wrong on this.

when you get a chance, and if it dosen't sink ships.. do people still carry a bayonet? If so, could we possibly find one that can do both functions?

Huh?

Do Canadian troops still carry the issue bayonet in places like Afghanistan?

Yes they came out with a new one that looks alot like the Kbar (sp) but the steel sucks ass, only cool thing was it had a wire cutting feature. I used mine for digging on route clearences, most of the time. So now I cant even cut warm butter with it. The same would have happened with any other knife, but this POS deserved to be abused.

I also never worried about having to charge bayonets fixed. If I am at the point were I have to charge the enemy with a bayonet Im as good as dead anyway. Besides I still had my back up knife I showed you all before :D .

There was a morbid joke going around too, that the only reason section commanders had pistols (some sort of browning model) was so they could off the commander and only get charged with second degree murder. Considering the amount of NDs that were associated with it.

It's probably a good knife but it would be the last knife I'd think of for military issue, expecially when you already have a bayonet and a multi-tool.
Do any forces folks have experience with this, and what they use them for? It's probably the last choice for cutting parachute lines. Some kind of hook knife would be better.

Ugh! The infamous jump/belt knife. They're issue items for Sappers because of the rigging/watermanship requirments. Jumpers got them for cutting themselves out of their risers etc. Those things are notorious for not keeping an edge of any kind. Sprogs at first think it looks cool because it's issue and can be worn without censure, but when used in any meaningful way they're thrown into the junk drawer and left until either lost or turned in when you get out.

On one tour, HQ Company (that was our Engineer Troops higher headquarters when we were attached directly to the Battalion) wanted ideas for a company gift to be bought with the profits made in the canteen. A couple of suggestions were made, one of which was buying jump knives for everyone. The idea of using our canteen money to buy an issued item (for us) was soundly rejected by the Engineers. Trouble was all the Infanteers were horny to get one and we got out voted. So we all ended up with another POS that we had the privilege of paying for!

Such is life!

Sure there are; Colt Canada (formerly Diemaco -- or something like that), makes the C-7 here in Canada. GM makes the LAV III, St. John's shipbuilding helped build the Halifax frigates. The list goes on and on. There might not be a manufacturer for everything the CF needs, but when there is, we should use them, not some company in China.

After all, like Riden is so fond of saying, what happens if a war breaks out? Where would we get knives then?

how much do you know about the purchasing procedure at you company?
At the place that I work, we have an approved vendor list, if a company is not on that list, the we do not purchase from them

There is a procedure for approving vendors, and the approval is only good for 1 year, and then you have to repeat the procedure.

Each part, subassembly, or product that we buy has a speoification that it has to meet. With a new part, the recieving inspection at the S/R desk is flagged so the reciever can not receive it into our system, unless an engineer performs a first articles inspection.

Even when we have an approved vendor, we are not allowed to buy just any product from them. All new products are subject to the first articles inspection.

Furthermore, there is a standard operating procedure that guides and restricts the purchaser on how they are to do their job. In our case, some product must be tripled sourced, and the purchaser must get quotes from all 3 sources, and she must purchase from the cheapest source unless the shipping lead time does not match our production schedule.

In short, I would not want May to come into the company that I work, and start telling our purchaser what she can and can not purchase. May's methods would completely undermine our whole quality system, and frankly - because we are a medical company - someone could die when you put that kind of power in the hands of a politician.
