Brenda seems really hot at the parents.. fair enough, i wouldnt give my child over to an airline in a million years.

But, at the same time, Westjet agreed to do it.. we have seen a number of posts with people who have flown young with no problem, and Hurley's point about babysitters, schools and relatives is a good point.

as far as the 70k goes, i don't think in terms of rewarding the parents..

I think terms of sending a strong message to Westjet and for them to stop fooling aorund.. we are discussing a five year old here..

Since this is the first time I've every heard of WestJet misplacing a 5 year old I hardly think they need to "stop screwing around" here. If anything I hope they change their policy and raise the age of flying alone. Trying to shift the ultimate responsibility to a company that has good intentions of taking care of their customers is BS. They made a mistake that may have been destine to happen sooner or later may change the way parents shuffle their responsibility around.

I think a lot of people on this forum have a hate on for West Jet because it's Calgary based.
At the same time they would let Air Canada off the hook for MURDER.

70000!!!!!! you're nuts.

Air Canada would have had to shut down decades ago for all their screw ups if you fined them at every mistake....But then again we the "tax payer " would end up paying their fines......just like we keep having to pay for the CBC and all their biased Liberal BS>

 Yes, Brenda is. But I have said numerous times WetsJet screwed up big time.

What I really want to stress, and what people seem to forget lately, is that you are responsible for your own kids, no matter who is watching them, or who you paid to look after them.

If the parents had just said: hey, you screwed up, give me my money back, and we accept the plane ticket to pick her up in Montreal, it would have been over for me. But no... These responsible parents are only after the money, and want WestJet to bleed for the mistake (yeah, big one, absolutely) for the rest of the childs life until she is an adult. So what comes first here? The safety of this child, or money the don't deserve?

As do thousands of other companies on a daily basis. The failing part, that is

Obviously the parents aren't at all embarrassed by sending this toddler alone on a plane, so it shouldn't come as a big surprise that they now want money.

A 5 year old is not a toddler.

WestJet owes the parents considerably more than a refund and a return flight. It's not about the money, but that's about the only way we have to deal with such situations.

Just remember, You are going to be the one paying for that 70K.

If they are going to pay that, that is for me more reason to not fly WestJet, than their screw-up was. I am not gonna pay for irresponsible parents who blame it on the company.

they owe them an apology and a free ticket. anymore than that is absolute friggen ridiculous...and I am a parent there is no way in hell I would send my 5 year old cross country by herself..
just think of all the things that could happen.

thats child abuse maybe the parents should have a social worker pay them a visit.

I bet that divorced mother has all kinds of skeletons in her closet.

It isn't necessarily about age, but the ability of the child to handle a situation, should it arise.

At 5, NO child should be put in that situation (no matter what guarantees you're given). If the precautions put in place fail (as they did in this case), you're leaving that child to fend for themselves.

Basically - if you're confident that your child can handle the situation independently, they're old enough to go alone. If you aren't, they're not.

This story just makes those obnoxious "Why do Westjet employees care so much? Because we're Westjet owners" commericals LAUGHABLE. I now feel validated in my previously irrational hatred of Westjet. They can get the hell over themselves any time now.

I missed this one earlier...after reading all your posts I know you hate everything west of Ontario ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL

Of course I do. I'm an arrogant Ontarian. We don't even acknowledge that Canada exists outside of Ontario.

AIR CANADA FOR LIFE!!! LOL.

You fly Air Canada and it may take a lifetime for you and your luggage to get there.
