Jabberwalker Jabberwalker:
We had a big air raid siren within sight of our house when I was a kid and I remember the WWII veteran parents all around us freezing and blanching when they tested it. The Brit war bride mother of one my classmates went to pieces. I guess that she had an authentic case of PTSD.

herbie herbie:
One by our school. Was in Grade 2 during Cuban missile crisis and even walking to school in Grade 12 kids would all go to the other side of the street and back again to avoid being near the goddam thing.
And I remember the drills. Little kids running home terrified. Nobody should have to go through that shit ever again.

In Slovakia, they still have the tests of their system, air raid sirens straight
out of WWII. Last Friday of every month, at 11am.

Spooky as hell to listen to, like being inside a war film.

We had them a couple times a year when we were living in Taiwan. Once a year, the drills utilized all public safety measures. No traffic was allowed except for police and emergency vehicles, and everyone had to stay indoors while the sirens wailed away and we could only come out when the all-clear siren went off. It lasted about 1/2 an hour. City hall was only a block away and there were sirens right on top of it.

Yeah, it is (Trump's) fault because he destabilized an already dangerous situation on purpose.

Yeah, if he'd only kept on paying extortion money to Lil' Kim like his past three predecessors did and if he'd only shut up about North Korean sanction violations things would be different...how? [huh]

Because North Korea makes routine threats of war at everyone and they spontaneously commit acts of insanity and violence...oftentimes against their own people.

So how would kissing their asses instead of standing up to them make anything worse?

It's like telling your kid to give their lunch money to the school bully instead of kicking his fucking teeth right down his goddamned throat like he deserves.

Because it's already bad and you don't want to make it worse.

Exactly the simplistic thinking Trump and his supporters use that's caused this. Along with the wilful blindness that the other guy sees YOU as the bully. And sheer pride that rules out an offer like Kennedy made to Cuba.

I used to be the kid who got bullied and guess what happened after I stopped worrying about what everyone else thought I should be doing and I started fighting back?

I got left alone.

Fucking amazing
how that works.

And a total false equivalence.
The USA is not the one hiding and quivering afraid to leave his own house.
And the bully at school didn't instantly retaliate against your friends he could beat senseless or threaten to shoot your family if you did anything.

A country that has nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them has been threatening to use them against my country. What they want is food, fuel, and cash.

And this President, unlike the last three, is refusing to pay up.

An imperfect peace is always preferable to an unnecessary war, especially one that would erupt on the border of a quasi-superpower like China who are certainly not going to be on the American side if radioactive fallout from the US nuclear strikes that would be needed to destroy North Korea's buried weaponry. The Hitler card's been played too many times, falsely too, by the warmongers in the United States and the gig just won't work again, not after the lies that led to Iraq.

This isn't about North Korea being innocent. They aren't, no matter how many genuine fools of the Sean Penn or Oliver Stone ilk will say so. They're vile beyond belief. But what they're doing is clearly in reaction to the unnecessary aggression from the United States. This isn't fucking around with a punk like Saddam Hussein this time. This is something that can easily break down beyond anyone's control and lead to a world nuclear war. And it's only happening now because of the recklessness of a damn fool like Donald Trump who is on the record (along with his underlings and bootlickers) with comments that basically go "what's the point of having a nuclear arsenal if you never use it?".

Hopefully that god so many pray too actually exists and steps in to stop the end of the world that can result from this idiocy. This is rapidly becoming a worst-case scenario and with someone as dangerous as Trump in charge there's not much likelihood of it getting better. Trump, by default, can't make anything better. His automatic setting is to always make everything he can that much more horrible than they ever were before he got his filthy mitts on the controls.

An imperfect peace that requires my country to kiss the ass of North Korea is not peace.

Fuck that.

So millions, or potentially billions, of others elsewhere get to die because some Americans refuse to accept that they don't get to win by the hugest margin all the time?

No, fuck THAT.

Saddam got whacked because he didn't have nukes.
Whacky got ghaddafied because he didn't have nukes.
Ukraine got raped because they had nukes, and then gave them up.
Afghanistan, no nukes. Open season.
Seeing the picture now ? Want to be safe ? Get nukes.

India and pakistan have nukes, notice how no one fucks with them.
But they aren't shooting missiles at each other, or at others, on a regular basis.

This is 100% on the Norks.

The problem with your analogy is that in this scenario, your country is the bully, with its thousands of nuclear warheads and other forces it has arrayed against NK in the region, who's leader blustered about "fire and fury the likes of which the world has not seen" - and the Norks are responding to that (as well as the history that your country is the only one to have ever used nukes in a conflict).

Don't get me wrong, the Nork leaders are vile and the world would be a better place without them in it, but they have every right to be worried that Uncle Sam is coming to kick their ass and take their lunch money.
