Yes, I've forgotten all about the good luck I've had over the last two years. Like losing a 20+ year long career, a house, pretty much all my money, a favourite cousin, and my mother. And then finding out that thirty years of paying taxes like a good little drone entitles me to sweet fuck all in terms of temporary financial help or re-training because of my terrible selfishness in being self-employed, and the final kicker of being laughed at because of living in the province that the rest of the country completely fucking despises. Yes, all that sweet white privilege that I'm literally drowning in right now.

And yet, if you were black, a woman, Native, gay, or anything else for that matter,
you would have tons of government programs to choose from, you wouldn't know where
to start with all free money and training.

But yeah, listen to all the twerps who whine about 'paying bills'
or 'trying to get on an even level. The bullshit flies pretty quick.

Of course, if you were a 'refugee', you wouldn't need to worry about any of it,
because the government just showers you with cash.

Lemmy Lemmy:
I'm sorry you've had a rough time of it. But ask one of those Syrians how their past two years have been.

Crocodile tears at best.

Sidebar: In any case the Syrian refugees we get haven't necessarily being doing that bad. The ones we get have generally been living in a country like Turkey courtesy of UN programs. Many of them work and have apartments there.

The ones with problems would be the infidel refugees and they rarely make it through the system set up by the Muslims in charge to enable the move to Canada option. We rarely get say Christians or Yazidis.

Actually if we took Lemsters advice and asked the Sunnis and Salafis we do get about their lives back where they were we might be surprised how many we'd find who want to go back.

The thing about Black/Indigenous/Latino/etc. pride, as I understand it, is that it's in many ways a reaction to being told, either implicitly or explicitly, that they were dim-witted savages who needed the Europeans to "uplift" them and "civilize" them, as if they couldn't tie their own shoes without European "help". That was the justification for abducting Indigenous children and shipping them off to residential schools, for instance.

Unfortunately, as Andy points out now we're getting to a point where we risk demonizing everything about the past, both in Canada and in other parts of the Western world, as if it's all irredeemably shameful and unworthy of celebration. Canadian history is an inescapable part of my heritage and who I am, both a source of pride and regret. I identify with the likes of John A. Macdonald and Wilfrid Laurier, taking pride in what they did right and lamenting what they did wrong.

That's true pride and patriotism, in my view.

Unfortunately, in part because of the current trend we've been discussing, the idea of cultural pride and celebrating one's heritage among Caucasians risks being taken over by the far-right bigots and nationalists. In a way, it's not unlike the way the frustrations of people fucked over by the modern neoliberal model who supported Trump are also exploited by the full-on bigots to advance their twisted agendas.

You can be proud of who you are for whatever reason you want. In fact, pride being a feeling, is not really something you have any control over.

It's the way people choose to display pride and evoke it in others that becomes an issue.

If you feel you have to rub it in other people's faces it's not pride anymore... I don't know what it's called, but it's not pride. :(

You'd think that losing an election to someone like Donald Trump would make liberals less dismissive of the anger that's out there, not pile it on even more until another explosion becomes inevitable.

That's the thing, isn't it? Anger. No one doubts that people are angry. What's confusing, though, is why they're angry. It's like watching a 5 year old throw a temper tantrum over a lollipop. All those angry people should sit down with a Syrian refugee for an hour. Maybe then they'd have some goddamn appreciation for the good fortune in their lives. Perspective is completely absent.

If only I could rep you for that

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
BeaverFever BeaverFever:
"The concept of common a "White race" that is shared by Irish, Russians, Germans, Slavs, Brits and (depending who you ask, Italians,Greeks) etc. is a recently created a myth. No German guy goes to St. Patricks day and says "ah yes, part of my heritage!" St. Patricks Day is as foreign to him as it is to a Pakistani. Up until recentl history none of these European peoples considered each other to be kin of any kind.

The ancient Romans and Greeks had closer ties and kinship with the swarthy semetic, asian and African people of the Mediterranean and Near East than they did with any Northern barbarians.

The modern idea of a "White" race was only invented in the slave trade era to distinguish from lesser "Non-White" race and justify their subjugation

A Hispanic person is Hispanic even if they are the only person on the planet. They speak a Hispanic language, have Hispanic traditions, etc. An Irish petition is Irish even if they are the only person left on earth. But a white person is only "White" if there are "non-white" people around that they want to differentiate from. Otherwise they're Irish,German, etc.

You're conflating nationality with genetic characteristics. For instance, I am genetically Scottish and white, but I am culturally Irish and my family still identifies as Irish even though we now know our families were Scots who lived in Northern Ireland for about a century while never intermarrying with the natives.

My nationality is American and that has nothing at all to do with my genetics because I am not related to any Native Americans.

Capish?

I think you're conflating because there's no such thing as being "genetically Scottish" Scottish is a cultural identity.

For that matter, there's no such thing as a genetic "race". Race is a man-made construct. There isn't really such a thing as saying someone is "genetically white" or "genetically black" except to say that their DNA causes them to produce significantly less more or less pigmentation than others, but there is no "bright line" you have some very light skinned black people and some very dark skinned white people. But most importantly these are only superficial traits. Nobody assumes that a Black poodle is a different race than a white poodle, or that a blonde is a different race than a brunette. And yet skin colour is considered differently for some reason.

That's not what Family Tree DNA says. They can identify you as Scottish, English, Irish, or Welsh. And they do it very accurately.

Also, I didn't say anything about race; you did.

IMHO, yes, they have the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason they want.
