Yup...Andy's all for spending other people's money. Give them everything, just as long as it's not in his back yard.

Certainly not on it's own. But it would take substantial money to fix the situation if it came to that. Doesn't seem much enthusiasm on either side for it. On the plus side we'd be free of the bullshit and erase the spatial people designation in our constitution.

Geee andyt last time I was on you were nattering about how canada should be nicer to natives and open our boarders to the poor unfortunates from around the world. Oh and be more understanding of religan. Now you want free of the bullshit.

While you are nattering on about this and poverty costing money have you done anything to inprove things in your area? Met the homeless? Bought them a coat or some food? Donated to a group working to keep kids off the street in school and productive? Anything?

Yeah, or we could just tell them to fucking live with it as every other "victim" of expansion and imperialism throughout human history has had to.

Jabberwalker Jabberwalker:
When the Mohawk around here blockade something, they show up with several dozen Marine Corps veterans and real weapons (see Oka ... by no means unique). We didn't defeat them in battle. They were laid low by bureaucrats. The Mohawk were nibbled to death by ducks which is a fate worse than death for an authentic warrior race like those guys.

I don't think a few dozen veterans are a macth for our armed forces. We didn't defeat them in battle, but if they insist on being beaten in battle, then we could go that route too.

Depends on how far the Mohawks would be willing to go. I kind of have my doubts that the Canadian or provincial governments have much of a stomach to fight long-term against any kind of genuine guerrilla insurrection. The Mohawks are also considerable tougher than that handful of ridiculous choads in the FLQ turned out to be. The effort against that kind of campaign would be deliberately sabotaged from behind by the likes of the CBC and NDP, as witnessed by their backstabbing at Oka & Caledonia, so it would kind of be a no-win scenario for the government to even enter into a confrontation to begin with. It's one of those things where Canada is far too similar to Europe because the political correctness and tolerance of illegal behaviour based on one's ethnicity or skin colour really has been going on for far too long.

Why would it cost a 'substantial amount of money' for the kids to go to school & the adults to go to work?
In short, the indians failed themselves.

Yes it would be a no-win, you're right. If you want to look at how badly that can all go wrong, just look art Israel adn the Palestinian territories. For those in power, indulging occassional strutting and bravado is probably better than the alternative.

The political correctness is funny because the whole native rights thing is based on maintaining heir racial purity.

Just funding school and health care to the standards of the rest of the country would cost some money. But the big bucks would be in helping these damaged people assimilate into our society whiteout just becoming trapped in a poverty cycle. In the end, it would cost less than ongoing welfare, but the upfront costs would be huge. Also, have to settle the land claims somehow. I'd rather buy them out than give them the land. No more obstruction to projects that way. Or ,we'd have to just give them free title to their land (reserves).

$1:
the whole native rights thing is based on maintaining heir racial purity.

Anyone who has spent any time on a rez, or has 'native' friends/family, knows that this is a crock of shit. There are plenty(if not a majority) of those who have treaty status, and all the benefits that go with it, whose ancestry is 50% + European, or something else. Here we have Black, French, British, German, Filipino, Italian, French, Korean and and Spanish mixes.
