That's what they were called when I stared going to them. Huge beer halls, with people piling glasses of beer three levels high on the little round tables they all had. (When one of them went over, look out). Many beer parlors still had separate entrances marked gentlemen and ladies and escorts, because those two groups used to be physically separated - before my time tho. The neighborhood pubs didn't come in until the NDP got in, and it still took quite a while for the beer parlors to disappear or be converted to pubs.

I thought you were dating yourself till you said "before my time" but, then it dawned on me that Vancouver probably got rid of those archaic laws long before progressive places like small town Saskatchewan. IIRC the had those laws in some jurisdiction's in Saskatchewan till the late 60's and some even into the early 70's.

When I first went into a beer parlour it was still in effect in my hometown and didn't change till the latter 60's. Actually the last place in Saskatchewan to allow mixed drinking was Warman and it waited till 1972.

I also didn't realise that women couldn't drink in public till around 1958 unless of course it was a private club like the Legion which would probably explain why they were the best places around to socialize.

Here's a link for the mixed drinking history in Saskatchewan if anyone is interested. It's an interesting read.

Meh, I don't know about BC, but in Alberta there is already a liquor store on almost every corner anyways (almost every little strip mall in Edmonton has one), so if you want it, it's already pretty darn accessible.

Even the big grocery chains (Costco, Suprerstore, Sobey's, Safeway) often have liquor stores in the same parking lot as their supermarket.

I guess if you're an alkie like Zip, then this is great news!

Actually the govt will only allow the same number of private sale licenses, so there won't be more outlets. The grocery stores will have to buy the license from a current private liquor store. Licenses are thought to become worth $1,000,000. What will happen is somebody with a license that isn't doing much business will sell to a store that thinks they can.

And the govt made a deal with the union, so it's good to see that govt liquor stores will continue. They are a consistent money maker for the govt and have better selection, as well as a manager who knows something about their stock and can give advice. Also are better at checking id for underage.

That's the opposite of how it used to be in Alberta - the government run stores were open bankers hours and the selection was crappy, mostly just Canadian products and a handful of imported items.

Nowadays, selection is crazy, with stores stocking hundreds or even thousands of different brands. Selection was the one thing privatization changed here in Alberta.

Well, I don't buy much booze. But the private stores I've seen are small little adjuncts to pubs. They don't have much selection. Can't speak to their hours, probably better than the govt. But no, the govt stores I've been in are much larger with much more variety. Maybe our govt stores are just too well run for the privates to compete on variety (takes a lot larger store) so they just do it on hours and convenience. That's why I've gone to them before - they were closer. But if I want to bring a nice bottle of wine as a guest, I'd never go to a private store.

Speaking of selection, have you been to Wine and Beyond? In Windermere or Sherwood Park? Talk about selection! I just wish there was one a little closer to me.

Sounds like Everything Wine out here. Got me a case of Marchel Foch from Starling Lane last week! [drool]

The place is incredible. Aisl after aisle of wine. From $10 to well over $10, 000. And the Scotch! One looong aisle of different scotches. From Famous Grouse to 50 year old Glenfiddich. And good prices too! (fuck, I sound like an ad!), but seriously I can save 15 dollars on one bottle of my favourite affordable scotch. It's worth the 30 minute drive. SOmetimes.

I don't buy much booze either, which why the issue for me is largely meh.

I'm not a teetotaler, but with a pair of pregnancies in the last four years, there hasn't been much time to drink...although some have suggested I should be drinking more not less!

That's exactly what I was talking about. As for distance, with the NW Henday open now, it's only a 20 minute drive...what are you wasting time on, your kid's swimming lessons or art classes?

Ha! As if my kids get anything besides a roof over their heads, a PBJ sandwich now and then, and the occaisional drunken "I love you".

The pregnancies are definitely a reason to drink. C'mon man, automatic designated driver! You gotta take advantage while you can.

You shouldn't drink when you're pregnant, Boots! Not good for the fetus!

Wellll
Beer in grocery stores is one thing.
but counterfeit wine under your arm is another.
I love the LCBO in Ontario and trust it completely .

Enjoy fake beaujolais wine B.C. coming to a corner store near you along with counterfeit ciggies made in china….

I bought three bottle of chardonnay, a 12 of Kilkenny and 5 Old Rosie ciders....there`s only 4 ales, 1 cider and 1 bottle of wine left.....I bought this last summer, and we`ve had guests over half a dozen times.
