BartSimpson BartSimpson: Thanos Thanos: Which is why a redefinition of The Job, that Canada's been avoiding for at least three decades, has to happen before we move forward in a proper direction. Why exactly do we need to project naval strength to the far reaches of the world when the most we do over "there" is fill a very minor support role? Can helicopters and fast patrol boats successfully take over, at a fraction of the cost, from what traditional frigates and destroyers do off our own shores? I'm not saying I support one of anything over the other but it's still a conversation that has to be had. Why have a military at all? Just surrender to the USA and we'll protect you...since we're going to be responsible for your protection anyway you may as well give up any lingering notions of actual sovereignty and just acknowledge your self-imposed status as a vassal of the USA. Yeah, yeah. "Resistance is futile. You shall be assimilated".

BartSimpson BartSimpson: Jabberwalker Jabberwalker: With a circumpolar waterway at the top of the world that is ice-free for a lot of the time You watch too much TV. You go to too many tea parties, Ayn.

Would we get to vote? And would this eliminate any controversy for Ted Cruz running?

Unsound Unsound: BartSimpson BartSimpson: Why have a military at all? Would we get to vote? And would this eliminate any controversy for Ted Cruz running? Funny thing is the answer would be 'yes' on both counts.

Jabberwalker Jabberwalker: You go to too many tea parties, Ayn. No one at any tea party thinks that the Arctic is ice-free 'a lot of the time' or even enough of the time to establish ship traffic. Like I said, you watch too much TV if this is what you think because the actual facts are far different.

Jabberwalker Jabberwalker: I didn't say that the Canadian passage is there yet, but the one that runs along the top of Eurasia is essentially operating already. It's been in continuous operation since 1935.

Thanks but no thanks, the last thing we need is to be 'protected' like you protected Iraq, Afghanistan, or almost any country in Central/South America during the 20th century.

It's been in continuous operation since 1935. Not like it is now. It's becoming an ice-free lake. the climate change deniers are welcome to shove their heads as far up their asses as suits them but that won't stop the thawing THAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING CONTINUOUSLY FOR 12,000+ YEARS. It seems to be accelerating, right now but politics aside, the Arctic Ocean is destined to be free of ice, sooner or later, and all of the Republicans in Texas can't change that.

And will freeze over again despite the fumblings of zealous AGW'ists.

... in another 10,000 years or so. We haven't yet emerged from the last "ice age" advance and you are already trying to cut corners and shorten the cycle. As I said, all of the Hillbilly politics in the World won't change that.

as soon as the salinity decreases to a certain point, due to melt water from the ice caps running into the arctic ocean, ice will once more begin forming more rapidly. It's a self regulating/correcting system

ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog: as soon as the salinity decreases to a certain point, due to melt water from the ice caps running into the arctic ocean, ice will once more begin forming more rapidly. It's a self regulating/correcting system ... with a much longer wavelength than some decades. How long is a complete cycle ... around 30,000 years?

Jabberwalker Jabberwalker: How long is a complete cycle ... around 30,000 years? True, The ice ages last longer than the warm periods so we should be thankful for the fact that we are blessed to live in a warm period. As a matter of fact, Canadians should be MOST grateful given that Toronto isn't covered with 3km of ice like it was just about 15,000 years ago.
