Thanos Thanos:
It was a reference to the auto industry bail out, the one that conservatives opposed that would have resulted in millions of additional American job losses during the last GOP-created mega-recession had it not happened. It had nothing to do with to bailing out the city of Detroit itself. Not that facts matter here but, oh well.

hmmmm...

http://www.freep.com/article/20130719/N ... na-pension

Don't jump and down, this story only came out an hour ago.

I'll cherry pick a bit.

$1:
LANSING — An Ingham County judge says Thursday's historic Detroit bankruptcy filing violates the Michigan Constitution and state law and must be withdrawn...

Aquilina said the Michigan Constitution prohibits actions that will lessen the pension benefits of public employees, including those in the City of Detroit. Snyder and Orr violated the constitution by going ahead with the bankruptcy filing, because they know reductions in those benefits will result, Aquilina said...

Aquilina, who like most of the judges on the Ingham court has a Democratic background, appeared prepared for the likelihood her orders will be appealed by the state...

She also ordered that a copy of her declaratory judgment be sent to President Barack Obama, saying he “bailed out Detroit” and may want to look into the pension issue...

The emergency manager has been trying to negotiate with creditors, to get them
to accept 10 cents on the dollar for debts.
One organization in particular is refusing to deal.

The secret thing is, because I don't live there, I really don't care. It's America's shit-heap to repair, not mine. I'm much more interested in the mental gymnastics of party ideologues that are going on in this thread, even after I openly spoke of the contempt I have for the gutter politics of black Democrats of the Jackson/Sharpton ilk. "Not good enough! You have to hate ALL Democrats or you're a traitor! Traitor! Traitor! Go back to CommieHitlerLand, traitor!".

(and you people want to be my latex salesmen *shakes head in despair* farts*)

Bankruptcy is carried out in a Federal Court and Federal judges usually don't give a flying f*ck what County judges think or do. The bankruptcy will proceed apace regardless of any state laws to the contrary.

Remember, this is the city that almost turned down a Canadian-financed bridge so they could keep paying tolls to Mr. Moroun.

On the plus side, Ontario could now buy Detroit for cheap.

Why would we want it? We captured Fort Detroit in the War of 1812 and in probably one of the greatest examples of foresight, gave it back.

The collapse of Detroit is the collapse of manufacturing and nothing could have changed that no matter how right-wing the government had been.

I could agree with you if places like Dearborn, Livonia or Troy was also
100% in the shitter.

Not to say everything is all hunky dory, but those towns aren't 20 billion in the hole.

Something else at work there.

Dearborn, Livonia and Troy weren't nearly the size of Detroit either. But you are correct, there is something else at work. The city was already well into decline back even before they built the RenCen. The collapse of manufacturing was still on the horizon then. All the manufacturing collapse did was speed up the inevitable for Detroit, starting in Pontiac.

So, Detroit is now worth 10¢ on the dollar. Milwaukee, Cleveland, Toledo, Niagara Falls NY will be next... maybe even this summer. There you have it. We have our very own "Greek crisis" just over the horizon ... just across the water.

Milwaukee? There's no downtrend in the beer industry. Not sure where you're going with the Greece thing...completely different problems altogether.

Both Greece and the Rust Belt crises are about living way beyond ones means. We usually do in this country as well but this time around, we seem to have dodged a bullet. The resource sector saved our sorry fat asses.

White flight? The auto industry drew many blacks up from the south, because of the opportunities there for them. Ie these are people relocating to make something of themselves and live the middle class dream. White folks weren't all that tolerant of living with these people tho, so fled to the suburbs.

Livonia does not look like this, even with the problems with the Big 3.

Have you read the recent one from Mark Steyn?

http://www.ocregister.com/articles/detr ... uptcy.html

$1:
To any American time-transported from the mid-20th century, the city's implosion would be literally incredible: Were he to compare photographs of today's Hiroshima with today's Detroit, he would assume Japan won the Second World War after nuking Michigan.
