Gunnair Gunnair:
Wonder how many of our irate posters demanding we respect the vets and the freedoms they fought for are willing to uniform up under compulsory service.

I almost joined the Navy when I was 20, except my knee injuries and surgery a couple years earlier meant I would have issues in training.

If the need did arise, and the military needed to draft every able body to combat a threat, I wouldn't think twice. I'd probably be cut down early in the fight, but I would be dying for my country. I can't think of a better way to go.

On the question of freedom, we need to distinguish between adult freedom and children's freedom. Students are children and children don't have the maturity to make the choices adults make. That's why we don't give them the freedom to drink or drive or drop out of school until a certain age. If you're 18, fine, I agree with Gunnair; you have the freedom to be ignorant. But giving this freedom of choice to a 15 year old is letting the inmates run the asylum, so to speak. They should have to go, just like they have to go to math and English class.

I agree, but in this case as I understand it, it is the parents making the decision, not the kids.

The choice is given to their parents

I didn't think attending ceremonies of any kind was in the mandatory curriculum. Math and English is.

Then there is that Provincial test you, as a parent, can choose not to let your child participate in. I even get a letter home, stating how to opt out.

Brenda, does your kids' school hold Remembrance Day ceremonies? I can't remember ever having them in Vancouver, nor does the VSB mention them on their website. I'm sure the lefty pinko pc VSB would allow students to opt out if they had ceremonies in the first place, so I'm thinking they just don't have them in the school at all.

They have an assembly tomorrow morning, for as far as I know.
They have spent time on it in class in the past few weeks. My youngest is in grade 7 and she made a collage about it, including the Flanders Field poem, the helmet on the gun etc etc (she drew it all herself)

They have a day off on Monday, and I do not plan on taking them to any ceremony Sunday. I never went to any ceremony on May 4th or 5th in The Netherlands either.
I do still keep a minute of silence on May 4th, at 8 pm. (which, co-incidentally, is my brother's birthday too.)

*checked website*
There is an assembly being held tomorrow from 10:45 till 11:20 at the cenotaph.

*EDIT* The reason why it is at the Cenotaph and not in the gym, is because the gym ceiling has partially been coming down over the summer and is STILL not repaired, so they (the whole school) has no access to the gym.
Yeah, LOVELY.

Cool, I'll have something for her to look at over the weekend,
since she is now familiar with the poem.

OnTheIce OnTheIce:

What if my son really isn't into math, can he just walk out every time they discuss math? What if a family is racist, can they just instruct their kids to stand in the hallway during any mention of black history?

In the end, yes.

Honestly, just what are you going to do here? Tie some kid up in a math class? If they don't want to learn math, or Black History or respect the service of vets by attending a Rememberance Day assembly, then tying them to a chair isn't going to suddenly unleash their inner keenness.

Try being honest here. Making them go and sit there gives you the punishment fuzzy - like sending some unwilling kid to his room - it certainly doesn't make them show respect.

Frankly, I don't want any hump showing up that's going to sneer or cough or act the jackass because he's been forced to participate against his will.

I think you're out of your mind.

You want a system where parents and kids and pick and chose which classes they decide to attend all based on "beliefs"....be my guest.

We can't fail them for missing the class either, we'd have to pass them.

The revolving door of religion and accommodation continues....that sweet smell of "freedom"

Agreed...bad idea.

Freedom, however, allows for them even if we don't like it.

That.
