Bob Rae said the repatration of Khadr was "long overdue."
"It is extremely unfortunate that it took the Conservative government this long to fulfil its responsibility to bring him back to Canada... Now Mr. Khadr will serve the remainder of his sentence under the supervision of the Canadian correctional system, and we can ensure that he receives proper treatment and rehabilitation," he said.
Stupid question, why did the Liberal not press hard for his release when they were still in power? It is mostly a rhetorical question, it has mostly to do with partisan politics.
Release?

“Mr. Khadr was the only Western citizen left in Guantanamo. And that’s because other countries, Australia for instance and others, had repatriated their citizens back to their countries,” said Dewar.
He is our problem, and the Liberals have been consistently saying the same thing for many years.

Liberal foreign affairs critic Ujjal Dossanjh stressed that, while the entire Khadr family may have a dubious reputation amongst Canadians, as a matter of principle the federal government needs to do what it can to make sure the proper legal steps are taken in the case against the 20-year-old.
"[He] is not a character who attracts a lot of sympathy [...] but that's not the ultimate issue," Dossanjh told Macleans.ca's Kady O'Malley. "[The issue] is whether we respect international law, due process and fairness in tribunals and whether we speak out in defence of fairness and due process. This government has been deafeningly silent on these issues. It is quick to lecture other states, but on this very important issue ... it has been totally silent."

Prime Minister Paul Martin said Sunday that Abdullah Khadr, arrested by the RCMP in Toronto on a provisional warrant issued by the United States, will have all the rights of any Canadian citizen during a police investigation. He then went on to say, "The family came to Canada many, many years ago, and they obtained Canadian citizenship many years ago. They have Canadian citizenship, and we don’t have two classes of citizens."
When did the Liberals or the NDP ask for his release, or anything other than fair treatment that should be afforded any Canadian citizen?
