Is smoking pot immoral but drinking alcohol moral?

Based upon the fact that one is legal and one is not, then yes.

So, morality=legality?

No, but breaking the law is certainly not moral.

I don't find getting drunk moral either, but it's legal.

Only if you're a simpleton who can't think for himself.

Really, if you want this to get personal, we can go that route.

Shall we engage in what kind of moral example you as a crime supporting, law breaking self indulgent and narcisisstic pot head will be to your child?

I'm curious on why you would find that immoral?

Well now you've forced me to Godwin the thread.

Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal.

If you're looking for a moral example for your child, don't introduce him to a falling down drunk. I really don't mind people that drink, but if you want to get drunk, do it at home, either alone or with other drunks.

But maybe that's just me... too many alcoholics in this family. :(

EDIT: Sorry, just want to explain that I don't mind drinking... heck, I do it myself... but there is a line between drinking and getting drunk.

Well, I don't think it's immoral - stupid and a poor example yes. Frankly, those days are done for me. Hangovers hurt waaaay too much now.

Last questions for you... and no, I'm not looking for a fight.

You find smoking pot immoral, right?
Is "illegality" the only reason you find it immoral?
If Canada legalized it tomorrow, would you change your mind?

If that's what you think, then you're probably one of the simpletons. If the law is an ass, it deserves to be broken. Just like the gun nuts who refused to register while that was the law. They were doing what they thought was a moral thing to do.

Prohibition makes us all worse off, and I'll do what I can to fight it. Civil disobedience included.

Thanks Ray, that's pretty much what I'm getting at. Gunny is saying smoking pot is immoral because it's illegal. Atleast, that's what I'm getting from this.

So that makes me wonder a couple things... is everything illegal also immoral? Whose laws do we go by? Is everything immoral also illegal? Whose morals?
Was it immoral for Rosa Parks to sit at the front of the bus?
Is adultery illegal?
Was it immoral for my dad for my dad to let me have a beer at our campsite in Jasper when I was 16?

Given teh state of the drug wars in Mexico, perhaps some innovative thinking is called for. The end of Prohibition was a blow to organized crimme. Their influence dropped significantly, as alcohol was their biggest moneymaker. It didn't get rid of them, of course--they mopved back to protection , prostitution, gambling, and moved into unions and eventually got into heroin, coke and other hard drugs.

I just came across this wonderful from the eve of US Prohibition from the wonderfully-named Reverend Billy Sunday:

$1:
The reign of tears is over. The slums will soon be a memory. We will turn our prisons into factories and our jails into storehouses and corncribs. Men will walk upright now, women will smile and children will laugh. Hell will be forever for rent."

Prohibition resulted in a signficantly increased crime, increased murder rate and increased sepnding on law enforcement and penal institutions.

Another interesting fact is that Al Capone was brought down on income tax evasion, not for any of the scores of murders he committed or ordered.
