And nuns had/have head to toe gowns. Just not the "raster" (Dutch word?) But they're not just banning the raster, or face coverings, but long gowns. Says so, right in the story. Why ban long gowns, head to toe or otherwise? No ass, perfectly legitimate question - does it apply to nuns too?

No, I didn't reply to Gunnair either.

Pity. Maybe some truth in it then. Natives and immigrants tend to be a bit of a target rich environment for you - the openly bleeding heart guy for everyone else.

Yep me and Martin, just a couple of racists. Along with most of the board as far as Natives are concerned. And of course the CPC with their partial burka ban and expecting immigrants to speak the language and saying things like we can't keep increasing immigration and getting stricter about business class immigrants and and and. Guess you're the only pure one left here. No wait, there's Curtman, Beaver and Sarkoski?

Nuns do not wear a head to toe gown, they wear a head piece and a gown to the knee, usually. At least, that is what I have seen the wear all the time in The Netherlands.

They are not banning long gowns, they are banning the HEAD to toe gowns. Not the shoulder to toe gowns, but the onesies that cover a person completely but the eyes. So now you are not allowed to dress up as a ghost anymore either in public using a white sheet where you cut holes out for eyes.

They are also banning everything else that covers the face like that.

The gown doesn't cover the face, the thing you called a rasta does. Nuns certainly did wear head to toe coverings, I bet a few still do. Don't see why you can't differentiate between a gown, head to toe or otherwise, and a face covering, but I guess it explains why the Duth are banning the gown as well. Banning face coverings has nothing to do with gowns - it's face covering. Presumably you couldn't walk around in your gonch with your face covered either. Wonder how much time they'll give bikers to get their helmet off when they stop the bike. If face coverings are OK for riding motorcycles, what's wrong with a niqab (that's what the rasta is actually called) when driving? What about those face masks the Chinese like to wear on the street? Sandblasters? Welders? If a woman is welding, can she wear the niqab? In Colorado I wore a neoprene face mask when cycling in cold weather - is that still OK? And on and on we go. Ban them where security is needed. A full ban is just nuts.

If a woman is welding, cans he wear the niqab?? Are you serious? That's a safety hazard.

I am sure you bet a few nuns still do. Nuns however, have no problem wearing plain clothes in public.

I am sure it is ok in Colorado, but I don't know if you know the weather in The Netherlands? It hardly ever freezes.

Now seriously, stop being an ass, and actually look at what a burqa is exactly (and what the ban is about). It is a gown that covers your body from the top of your head to however long it is. Some to the ground, others to the knee, with a piece of cloth with tiny holes in it to look through. Niqab is a full face veil. Those are not allowed anymore.
As is a balaclava, or a full face helmet unless riding a bike. But no, when you go into a store with a full face helmet on, you have a problem. I always saw it as common courtesy to take my full face helmet off and lower my scarf so my face was visible when I pumped gas. Now it will be law.

I don't know what a gonch is, but if that is something like speedo's, then you are right. Besides the fact that would be indecent exposure, walking down the streets in just speedo's, wearing a face covering with that would be double fined.

Ah, I now see why you keep going on about "gown". It is because of this, right?
$1:
the head-to-toe Islamic gown

I would call that "bad journalism".

And I would call you an ass for not looking up the actual facts.

Oh well, not the first time. I went with the story as posted. I'll catch you next time you do that instead of researching in depth. I don't know why they mention burkas and gowns in the first place - just ban face coverings. Tho, as I say, a complete ban is too extreme and has too many problems. Good on the cops for not being willing to arrest unless it really is a problem.

I don't know why they mentioned "gowns". I take it they tried to explain what a burqa is, but hey, I didn't write this piece. And sure, you do that when I go on page after page about 1 word the reporter used, while I have been told page after page that that particular word was obviously not the right word to use.

The cops are not supposed to arrest, they are supposed to fine. As they DO when you drive 5 km/hr too fast. But I take it they see the importance of that. Because that is REALLY a big deal. Going 105 where 100 is allowed. Yep.
Also, it is apparently the choice of the individual cop to enforce any law. As long as they don't see the importance of the law, they can just pretend they never noticed. Yep. Good on them.

Nope. There are exceptions. This is one of them.
I don't even think this would fall under the law, because this lady is pretty recognizable. :P

(btw, have you ever seen a woman go shopping like that? ;-))

Guess I'm channeling Gunnair. I just had to go there, because shopping while Burka'd - where else can you go.

I don't think banning the Burka is racist. I think a complete ban is stupid and too heavy handed. The law will also be hard to enforce, and if the cops go only after Muslims, and not other people who have face coverings and are contravening the law then the Muslims will have a good case to cry discrimination. Better just a ban where it's called for.

They won't just go after Muslims and not after the rest. Fact is, that you won't see people shopping with a balaclava on, or a full face helmet.
Also, women can wear them in the Mosque without a problem. Just not in public. Just as ski masks are not allowed anymore. The law is very simple to enforce. Public place? Don't cover your face. What's hard to enforce there?

Don't forget that everyone over 14 is supposed to be able to ID themselves when asked by police. If not, you'll be fined. How can you be ID'ed when your face is covered?

You can't. So uncover your face when asked for ID. Then put the cover back on. Simple.

If we had this law in Vancouver there would be a lot of unhappy Chinese running around. They love to wear those little dust masks thingies.
