We should have had a pipeline from Vancouver to Halifax decades ago.

We should have had refineries in every province decades ago.

We don't.

The cost do so now is upwards of a couple trillion.

We could do it in the near future if we had enough port access to sell to the global market on our own terms. We won't have that until we have more port access.

Is it an environmental version of Russian Roulette? Yes.

Do we have much of a choice now? No.

saturn_656 saturn_656:
I read somewhere an idea to pipe it east (build some new pipe and reverse existing pipe). Canadian crude could be moved to refineries out east and exported.

Maybe we could stop importing all that "unethical" middle eastern oil.

Read that too. Avoids the Nimbys on the West Coast. Either one, let's get the fuck on with it.

Actually there already is a pipeline to Vancouver, and a competing project is working toward twinning that. Would also avoid having to do environmental assessments etc, since one pipe is already there, but of course many in Vancouver would go apeshit if we built a big terminal for tankers there.

Hell they could build it in my backyard if they wanted too (I'll take jobs and money)... only problem is I'm probably about 500 clicks from any kind of coastline.

Could someone please explain to me how Chiquita plans on boycotting "dirty oil". I've worked around refineries all my life and I just can’t see how you can some how magically separate upgraded crude from the sands from conventional oil. It's not like there’s a "oilsands" pump and a "conventional" pump to pick from when those semis go to fuel up. :|

dino,

You can't. They would have to boycott all oil refined in the US.

This is just feel-good lip service, but it is still insulting.
