Thanos Thanos:

Decriminalization for simple possession of non-traffickable amounts, but the big smugglers, dealers, and lab operators are still fair legal game.

legalization for simple possession of non-traffickable amounts of pot, but the big smugglers, dealers, and lab operators would be out of business but would be fair legal game.

Are you advocating decrim of crystal meth, since you refer to lab operators?

You might wanna re-read what Thanos said there andy.

And what will I find if I do? He wrote lab operators, which implies hard drugs, not dope.

I do think we should legalize heroin - so doctors can use it in pain management. A legally give it to addicts under very strict conditions the way they do in Switzerland. But crystal meth - I'm not sure there's a good reason to legalize it.

Decriminalise all of it. Tax it, control it's sale, sell it from provincially run stores.

I didn't read Thanos' post that way. He said decrim for simple possesion of non-traffickable amounts of pot BUT, the big smugglers dealers and lab operators would still be fair legal game.
I never saw anything that would indicate he was in favour of decrimming anything but weed.
Then again, I'm high right now so I could be missing the nuance

I'm counting angels on the head of a pin here. Decriminalization of individual possession of less than trafickable amounts. While the substance remains illegal, simple possession is no longer a prosecutable offence. Probably complicated but the legal system's found even tinier loopholes on other issues so it's not impossible to also do it here. No mercy for heroin, meth, or crack dealers/manufacturers though.

rickc...I know that most 'normal', 'average' Americans like Canada and Canadians as I think most 'normal' Canadians like Americans. We 'normal' folk, however, do not make the laws of each of our countries. We give this responsibility to politicians who, we may elected, but are controlled by various lobby groups and high powered PAC's in the states. Once these guys are elected I wonder how many of them actually give a shit about anything they campaigned on. Money makes decisions in the states and those decisions may have a direct influence on we Canadians.

The word pot does not appear in Thanos' post. You're just hallucinating again.

For heroin, I'm not sure i would just want to sell it from a store. In Switzerland they make you come in for your heroin - sorta like Insite but they give you the drugs. So it's in a controlled environment and addicts actually find it boring and start talking about quitting. Certainly I wouldn't favor selling horse to any adult that wants it. And crystal meth is even worse. You can live a long healthy life on heroin, but not crank.

andyt...how can someone live a long healthy life on heroin. I have seen what heroin addictions can do to a person and I would not define that as healthy.

That's because they're getting all sorts of crap mixed in with the H, maybe sharing needles, doing all sorts of dangerous things to try to pay for the heroin, etc. Heroin by itself, in safe, regulated doses is constipating and reduces sex drive - that's about it. Take a look at the Swiss program, you'll see teachers, musicians, all sorts of people with straight jobs who happen to be addicted to heroin. The biggest problem with heroin is the high cost of it being illegal, and the fact you never quite know what you're getting on the street. These would be solved by legal, regulated heroin. I wouldn't promote it as something that should just be sold to anyone. But anyone who can demonstrate a long term addiction, and has tried to kick without success should certainly have access to it.

In fact the drug trial we had in Vancouver demonstrated just that. And, they also tested some synthetic substitute that is already legal (ie by prescription) that worked just as well and is a lot cheaper.

You either proscribe all narcotics or you decriminalise all narcotics. These half measures never work. Heroin is on the streets now.

Control it, tax it. If losers want to use it, they should be able to get it from legal sources and leave the rest of us alone.

^^^^^^
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

(if it's free market then the rest of us shouldn't be obligated to pay for rehab for addicts with our tax dollars; I never forced anyone to get high so why should I have to pay for it when they turn into junkies and spiral out of control?) :?
