CDN_PATRIOT CDN_PATRIOT:

The teacher should seek other employment because she's right about the non-recyclableness of a Ziploc sandwich bag? Really??
-J.

And this is where you fail to see the point.
It is not a teacher's job to be right or wrong. It is their job to teach the kids all the options there are and give them the confidence to make the right decision for themselves.

This is a terrific illustration of the self-righteousness and reckless cruelty that are the personality hallmarks of ideologues everywhere.

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Brenda, the schools have been brainwashing the kids on any number of topics such as homosexuality, guns, liberal politics, collectivist politics, abortion, sexual morality, morality in general, and twenty years ago they were fervently preaching to the kids that alar was going to kill them and that chloroflourocarbons were going to cause a massive depletion of the ozone layer and etc.

Sorry to say, but the ship long ago sailed on public schools brainwashing children.

I'm going to call bullshit on most of this post, but not all of it. Yes, schools have been brainwashing students on environmentalism for decades. I remember from my own elementary days watching David Suzuki documentaries on acid rain complete with some kid reading a litmus strip and confirming that a rain sample was acidic (OMFG!). I remember a thing we did where everything that could be spun as a pro-green activity earned a point, and as the school earned more points, it could achieve new green ranks.

But the rest of it is BS. We were never in the least bit indoctrinated on homosexuality, guns, politics, morality. First I've heard of alar, and whileyou may be right, it seems like not particularly related to school indoctrination, more like investigative journalism overreacting. Lastly, CFCs did cause major damage to the ozone layer and it's only by phasin them out that the damage isn't getting worse. Don't go to Australia, you'd probably be lynched for dismissing ozone depletion down under.

Acid rain was also a legitimate concern. It's great that they teach environmental awareness in school. The question us just how to go about it - shaming the kids is never the answer. Just program them right, (ie have them discover themselves what works) and they'll pester their parents to do the right thing. I remember how small I felt when the young son of a woman I was involved with scorned me for flushing the toilet after just pissing. In Colorado that's a big no no, now that I don't flush on yellow in BC everybody thinks I'm a pig, even tho we're also tearing our hair out about water conservation in Vancouver.

Nothing wrong with teaching the kids that re-usables are better than throw away. But that's one problem in our society: people think because they don't use styrofoam cups, but bring their own cup in the SUV on the way to Starbucks, they've solved the environmental problem.

Ehhh, the avatar is merely the me that I fight hard to keep supressed. 8)

I'm amazed that the teachers and administration at this school would be so obtuse as to think this sort of stunt is an acceptable teaching method. It shouldn't be rocket science anymore to anyone in the education field that you don't have to scare the hell out of little kids, or be grotesquely unfair to them either, in order to get them to learn something. I'm certain that a different approach, using films for example that show the dangers of pollution to animals, would have gotten through to almost all of the kids without having to resort to some shit-headed 'us vs. them' mentality that reeked of bias and basic unfairness.

I've yet to meet a kid that age who isn't a total sucker for animals. That's probably why being excluded from the contest was so hurtful to the little guy in question. By contrast, if they'd made some sort of attempt to use the welfare of animals as a positive teaching method they could have achieved the exact same result without leaving some little kid all ripped up inside. Seeing kids get upset like this is what gets me upset. And then angry.

Actually I'd like to be in a room with that teacher and prinicpal for a few minutes. Y'know, just to let my inner avatar out for a few minutes on their sorry asses.

It seems to me that the parents were willing to embarrass their own kid to make a point here.

Dig the friggin container out of the dishwasher add a drop of soap, swish around with the dish rag, dry with the towel and place sandwich in container.

Shouldn't take more than 30 seconds, about the same time it would take the mother to push a 1/2 a dozen brownies down her pie hole.

Seems that some schools are PUSHING an agenda as opposed to applying a curriculum.
