ASLplease ASLplease: Heavy_Metal Heavy_Metal: ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog: I think many parents expreess outrage at the teachers rather than at their children's behaviour, because their child's poor behaviour is a reflection of their own failings. Lots of adults bitch about the frustration of having to deal with one or two kids, try dealing with 20 - 30 at a time. well said really? This is a classic example of Argumentum ad hominem (argument directed at the person). This is the error of attacking the character or motives of a parent who has stated a concern, rather than the concern itself. Furthermore, I thhink the use of the word "many" demonstrates that he's too cowardly to substantially commit to his assertion. Irony...

Gunnair Gunnair: Yogi Yogi: Hell, my mother used to tape our mouths shut when we wouldn't quit bickering with each others. Some of you here would surely remember that green 'military issue' duct tape that our dad's used to bring home. Used to? 'Civie kids' need a 'taste' of life on the base! A lot of our teachers were civilian, but they were given 'due respect'. Our military teachers- 2 come to mind; Capt Barry & Sgt. Davies- had absolutley no disciplinary problems. Much the same with the catholic schools I attended. Them frustrated old nuns. Man, you just didn't fuck around with them. They were down-right vicious! And you NEVER told your parents about anything that might have happened at school, because the usual response was "C'mere boy. They probably didn't 'do it' right. Let me show you how it's supposed to be done"!! A 'trip to the office' usually resulted in the strap & a phone call home. Not good! ( See above!) One of the teachers at catholic school comes to mind also. Mr. Baron. If you 'acted up' in his class you were given the choice of " the pointer or the office"! I don't know if teachers use a pointer anymore, but I'm sure Gunny and Ray, and Shep and QBC will remember it. 'The pointer' was about a 3 ft x 1/2 inch hardwood dowel with a rubber tip on it. Anyway, choosing between 'the office' and 'the pointer'( 3 across the ass) was akin to choosing between 'left nut' and 'right nut'! Keep in mind that this was 'back in the day' when fortrel and nylon pants were the fashion. You went up to the front of the class, "Legs straight"! Facing the blackboard, you bent over and grabbed on to your ankles. (With only one thought in mind; 'Don't let go; don't let go; don't let go. ) Cuz each time you let go of your ankles, Mr. Baron earned a 'free swing'! More than anything else, I can still hear that goddamn pointer whistling thru the air! ( I often wonder if the 'fat kids' felt the same pain us skinny kids felt) I dunno how high I could jump whilst keeping a firm grip on my ankles, but I'm sure that I jumped forward at least four feet with each whack! Then, you got to return to your desk and "Be seated"! Good behaviour reigned supreme for the rest of the class, and whatever behavior brought you into contact with 'the pointer' was not soon, if ever, repeated!

Thing is Yogi is that these things, for me at least, if not completely forgotten are at least forgiven... I can laugh today and have no hard feelings. Why, you may ask... is that I deserved the punishment. It's not like kids who got regular beatings from their parents for nothing, or very little.

I can only ever remember getting hit once by my dad, and that was across the palms, for taking money out of his pockets without asking. The LOOK was all it usually took.
As a kid my dad had fun. His mother was his teacher for a few years, plus she was the school principal. So he'd get it once from her as his teacher or principal, a smack when he got home from my grandfather and when my grandmother got home, one from her as his mother. According to my aunts and uncles he was a bit of a slow learner when it came to cause and effect....he'd hit someone during recess, they'd squeal, he got the strap, he'd hit them for squealing, they'd tell a teacher, he got the strap...I think you get the picture

My mom was the disciplinarian with whatever the "weapon du jour" was. My dad only ever hit me once, and it was a good one. I laugh about it now because he showed amazing restraint before he finally drifted me. Never harboured an ounce of resentment towards him for it Not did I against my mom, I was a friggin' handful when I was a kid

so you didn't piss her off while she was baking I take it Kids aren't stupid, if they know that they could be punished they usually don't go over the line. An older friend of mine says that when he taught at a rural school in Saskatchewan, the new principal used the strap 12 times the first year, his second year once, and after that only about two times over a ten year period. the message had been sent.

Sorry folks, I see no excuse for this, these are 5 year old kids, not a bunch of unruly teens or even older elementary kids, what ever happened to removing the disruptive students from the class? Were it my kids I'd demand this teacher never teach again, taking year 1 kids (we're talking kindergarden here) and taping their mouths shut. It's expected that kids this age will act up, it takes time to settle a bunch of 5 year olds down, we are here blaming parents or reminising about the good old spanking days ect when we should be looking at this teachers capacity to deal with unruly kids.
