If I hit someone whether or not that I killed them I would stay at the scene.


Yeah, well you're not RCMP corporal Robinson, part of the famous taser quartet. And he got away with it. Returned to the scene and claimed the alcohol on his breath was from his having a few drinks while he ran home to steady his nerves. He isn't charged with drinking and driving but only with obstructing justice.

Oh, I don't beleive that story for a second either. But the problem is proving it it.

The problem is that the penalty for leaving the scene is lower than that for impaired driving. As long as there is something to be gained by fleeing rather than staying, this will continue. In fact, making the penalties for impaired driving harsher increases the incentive to flee. The Criminal Code needs to be amended so that the penalty for leaving the scene of an accident is the same as that for impaired driving.
