It's very telling that our society would rather punish parents instead of the criminals themselves.

I think people in general are tired of hearing about rampant youth crime these days, that being said alot of us were hellions growing up and not because of how we were raised. I for one disagree with punnishing parents, we need to give power back to parents who want to bother disiplining their kids and start holding kids (this guy was 16) accountable as adults for adult crimes

If he was 16, and this was rape (fuck what the legal system calls it) the he might be charged as an adult. But way too often rapists are given light sentences, so even as an adult he might not do that much time.

Parents are expected to discipline thier children, but then are hampered by the fear of the state punishing them for disciplining thier children.
There was a dad in Quebec not too long ago who tried to ground his young daughter and the kid took him to court and the judge ruled in the kids favor.
Can you imagine if that daughter had ended up being the 12 year old in this story?

There was a news conference this morning. It wasn't rape (just statutory rape), there were no pictures taken. All blown out of proportion.

The fact that a 12 year old and a 16 year old drink and have sex in a public place is shocking enough tho.

Darn, another good story all shot to hell.

But the article plays down the scenario a bit too much. It's not as if this would have been the first incident of a girl being raped while others watched.

Well the fact they didn't have sex in the dugout is the surprising bit.

PS: I too feel the dis-attachment with todays youth. Me with my pocket calculator, wristwatch and sans cell-phone feel antiquated.

So rape not true, filming not true, a group of 12-16 year old "kids" drinking and 2 of them having sex in broad daylight in a school field while the rest watch and we are expected to not be concerned with what kind of behavior is going on.
Addmittedly there is obviously an issue with the press and how information is transmitted instantly, but I think all the parents of these kids need to take a more active role in their kids personal lives.
Addition, when I was 16, yes I was sexually active, but it was with other 16 year olds (and for sure no one was watching, except that one time and it was ok

Ditto. I think it's a stupid law though. If she's old enough to consent, what difference does a year or two older partner make? Thirteen is OK, fourteen is OK, fifteen is not? If it was friendly and consensual, I don't see a problem. Other than the exhibitionism. Good way to catch some nasty bugs is to consume alcohol before sex.
