The first of which is that in Japan the kids are socially obligated to take care of their parents.

And with that, all discussion ends. Because he didn't. He took care of him.

Were it that Japan was that simple. It isn't.

Taking care of one's parents in Japan is literally a form of religious ancestor worship and even if your parents are the biggest fucking assholes in all of Japan and everyone from the Emperor on down to the guy who cleans toilets at the Toyota factory knows it, every last one of them still expects you to take care of your parents and to defer to them.

Brenda Brenda:
If his toys were so important to him, and he DID have a job, WHY the hell was he living with his mom?

Multiple reasons.

The first of which is that in Japan the kids are socially obligated to take care of their parents. It's not the law, mind you, but the social obligations in Japanese culture are far more powerful than any mere law. Until his mother dies this kid is socially obligated to take care of her. Perhaps he could be married and have mom live with him but chances are she's a kakadenka harpie who drives off any women the guy has ever met.

Second is the price of real estate. Japan is the home of the 100 year fixed-rate mortgage. When you buy a home you and your kids and their kids and their kids get to pay off the loan. So while he may have been living with mom he's probably on the hook for the mortgage and can't get his own place.

Third is that he may be jobless due to the vast number of layoffs that have been going on in Japan. No one in Japan has job security anymore.

Fourth is that his mom may well have raised him to think he is the freaking Emperor and now the kid can't function in society. The Japanese lavish attention and everything else on their sons and this makes some of them very, very difficult to be around given that not everyone else may think Mrs. Tokugawa's litte boy isn't worth worshipping and addressing in high formal Japanese.

Hate to say, but this kids living arrangement is not unusual for Japan and nothing should be read into this.

Something people on here are missing that many Asian cultures have 3 generations at least in one home and do have more respect for their elders (over the top in my opinion but oh well). Might want to get that through your head instead of blindly commenting on some guy living with his parents as a 'LOSER'. Not everybody is great like you Brenda.

ROTFL
I love it how a 30 year old man,who lives with his mom, and his toys, get defended :D

The guy is a loser. Period. He got what he had coming. He's not a baby. Act like one, and you will be treated like one :)

Seriously, how old are you? Speaking of acting like a loser and baby, you want to be treated like one too? Brushing up on some culture might do you some good.

Hmmm.
So you think a 30 year old with 300 boxes of toys stocked to the ceiling of his moms home is not a loser? A 30 year old man that is supposed to respect his parents and take care of them, but wants to die with his beloved toys is not a loser?
A man who sets fire on the house where the beloved toys are stocked in, burning them because his mom threw away SOME of them (mind you, not even all) is not a loser?

Yeah, you are damned right that I am greater than that.

He had no respect for his mom, please.

I am absolutely not interested in the Japanese culture, sorry.

No, I've noticed that. Europeans are different from Canadians.
And respect? Yeah, plenty. Just not for a guy who sets his moms home on fire.

For the record, I agree that the guy was a nutcase, they're in any society. My beef with you is calling that guy a loser for living with his parents in a society that encourages it and by your own admission, having no interest in Japanese culture makes you look....kind of idiotic when presenting your argument. That's really all I'm saying. Japan has their own whack jobs although not in abundance, are some of the craziest dummies on the planet.

By your above quotes of respect and being treated in kind...you're not making yourself look good.

Well, I must admit I didn't know that it is pretty common for Japanese to live in the same house as their grandparents basicly, when they are adults themselves. Learn something new every day ;-)

Nevertheless, when you say Japanese have a lot of respect for their elders, I'm thinking that this guy didn't have any.
First, he stocks his moms house with 300 boxes, and then sets it on fire when she is fed up with it and throws some away. The fact he stuffed that house is imo lack of respect.
I do have respect for his mom, who, imo (but that can be diffused by being a mom myself, and dealing with the stuff my kids stuff the place with), got fed up and (I assume) after 100,000 warnings finally couldn't take it anymore.
I mean, 300 boxes, do you know how much space that takes up? I can imagine Japanese houses are not that big anyway...

Well, Japanese are known to take things way too seriously on the stupidest things but that was thousands of dollars wasted because of her. Besides, it might be his home with his parents living there. Not an excuse but oh well. The guy probably went "BANZAIIIIII"

Just to add to the news story which is sadly lacking. The guy was 29 when this incident happened. She threw out Gundam models which can be very expensive and very collectable.

It was the family home of only which this man and his mother lived. It was a two-storey 2,700 sq ft.

And he was employed. He was a factory worker.

I know a bit about Japanese culture (and my frineds live there). I can confirm 3 generations of a family living together in a house is common. I have also collected at one time and even had my own store front for collectables. In my opinion, both of them were in the wrong. He was in the wrong for burning the house down and she was in the wrong for throwing out his property. It doesn't say who owns the home but if it was the mother's, she should have told him to leave after a warning or two.
