Brenda Brenda: Mustang1 Mustang1: Brenda Brenda: Do you always have to be a pompous ass? And this contributes what to the thread, hypocrite? And just because Michael Jackson wasn't legally convicted doesn't mean he didn't molest children. I guess you think O.J. had nothing to do with two murders either, huh? How delightfully naive. Excuse me, Mr. High on your horse, I think Shep can cover his own ass. You barge into this thread that I was already posting in for the sole purpose of calling me names. Maybe you should take your arrogance somewhere else. It's not needed here. You are making assumptions that stand no ground. Have a GREAT Sunday. Don't like having your hypocrisy kicked back at ya'? Tough. Don't do it. You've jumped into threads to karma-bomb me before, so i thought i'd demonstrate how disingenuous your behavior really is. Go cry somewhere else, hypocrite. You just got called out.

So you decided to do the same? AWESOME! You're not better than me! Nope, just illustrating your hypocrisy ( i guess that part sailed over your head, huh?) and doing it well. And i'm not so much against the activity insomuch as i'm against the hypocrisy. You're not very bright are ya'? Shuffle on, hypocrite - you've been called out. And you'll be continued to be called out.

Everything is racist in its own way Like a starry summer night Or a snow-covered winter's day And everybody's racist, in their own way Under God's Heaven The world's gonna find a way A good words, especially first few, take the point ![Drink up [B-o]](./images/smilies/drinkup.gif)

raydan raydan: Bacardi4206 Bacardi4206: What a fantastic thread this has turned out. That's sarcasm... right? Yes, started out as on-topic debate. Than quickly turned into a personal smash up before it could even get to page 2. Which I am disapointed as I thought this was going to be a good debate. I mean, here is this bullshit again where people are calling racism for a cream that is designed to "lighten" your skin. Yet again, the whine man is a racist. When infact those same companies and other companies for years have been selling simular products to "darken" skin. Nobody is born with the skin they prefer, these creams atleast give you a option to customize. I was born with pretty white skin, not pale or anything however I always prefered a good tan look. Just the way I prefer it. As I am sure there are people with much darker skin that wouldn't mind going for a more lighter look.

Yup. Seem that people look for racism everywhere. Pretty soon they'll be calling Blackberries, blackberries, black licorice and The Black Eyed Peas... racist.

In India (which is what this article is pertaining to), it's difficult to get a job or move up in a career with dark skin. So skin whitening treatment has become the de facto social mobility tool, which naturally has sparked outrage and controversy, especially among the lower dark skin castes. Now, people can lighten their profiles on facebook so they can get more friends. This is more critical of the state of the situation in India, rather than just a facebook photo editing tool. This isn't simply about the cosmetic aspect of skin tone modification, it's about the social implications of it. In Canada having a tan or pasty skin won't change the way people perceive you, but in India, China and other Asian countries, skin tone absolutely matters on a social and work oriented level. It will make the difference between a promotion, and perpetual dead end work.

In India, what do you mean by "dark" skin? As in somebody whos Black? Because they are all pretty much fairly dark skinned there or "brown". So I don't understand how having "light" skin would effect there social life or carrer options.

Actually (although I'm not familiar with their situation) the same used to be the case here in North America. People who were "dark skinned" (not blacks, just white folks with tans), were considered a lower class citizen because they were working class. The more fair the skin of a person, the higher their social standing because they didn't have to labour outdoors. I'm assuming it's a similar situation in India today. Darker skin means working class, therefore lower social standings. Just guessing here..

I knew they had a very strong caste system, but I didn't realize that skin tone played into it at all.
