these decisions dont just affect the afganistan war, it affects the canadian military for 10 years ormore

The expected life cycle of the F35 is 30 years.

thanks

considering the CF-18 program is older than 20 years, and still has another 20 to go, I'd have to guess that the F35 program will outlive the expected life cycle.

Another thing that is happening is the US is getting tired of servicing F18s for other countries, Canada is one of the few countries that have been provided with full service capabilities so this might end up creating a few canadian jobs when the US refocuses it's resources on newer jets.

This is Canada, ASL. The life cycle for the F-35 is 30 years...for the Americans. For Canada, we'll do whatever it takes to keep the F-35 flying for 50-60 years. Hell, look at the Sea Kings

fighters don't last that long usually. CAF puts allot of hours on it's fleet we have some of the highest hour hercs and sea kings in the world. Our fighters do have a lot of hours but they get punished, I can't see them lasting more than another decade. They are already prone to massive mechanical breakdowns on the fly, they are old and getting harder to maintain. They were getting old when I was still in 10 years ago!

I am guessing they are all over 10 000 hours of time now.

Can anyone tell me what the real cost of these fighters is going to be?

CBC is claiming 9 Billion (16 July 2010) and yet Canoe News says 16 Billion (15 July 2010).

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2010/07/ ... -jets.html

Which story is accurate could make a big difference in public opinion and the procurement process, since that's a 7 billion dollar difference?

EyeBrock EyeBrock:
To be fair, the Libs post the EH101 debacle have made some good procurement moves.

I'll have to take your word for it since I can't seem to remember any.

Although I do remember the EH 101 Helicopter being scrapped. Other than that nada, nothing, zilch, zero.

What were they?

9 billion for the units itself, + 6 billion for the length of the program and add the rest for inflation and and interest payments over the 20 years. That is of course even before the final cost of the F-35 is calculated, since it was a single-bid tender. We have no protection from price increases since the intent of the conservatives don't want to open the bid to other manufactures.
