Loon, don't care if it's taken, it's the best choice.

Personally I don't want a Bird of Prey, that's just not the Canadian way. Now if there was a non-Aggressive bird that would f*** you up if you cornered it, I'd be all for it.

See, it's thinking like that which is how Canada is relegated to the unknown/unappreciated and why people think we're too nice and polite and essentially pussies.

RTH FTW.

I don't care if others think we're "Pussies". We are what we are and part of what we are is not being aggressive. I'd like to keep it that way.

SO why have another terrible, laughable symbol?

The red-tailed hawk is not even aggressive. It lives life as we do but will defend its territory, like we do. It's a bad-ass symbol that can be found across Canada. I say we go for it.

I'm torn between the Red-Tail hawk and the Raven.

I watched with absolute delight the numbers of the RTH grow in southern Ontario from an endangered species to the point they are everywhere again. I have a pair that live in the canopy of trees that surround our neighbourhood. I love watching them.

The Raven on the other hand, is my clan and my territorial bird but they have such a rich fabric of folklore attached to them that they appear in almost every culture. From the trickster, the bringer of light, guarding the Kings and Queens of the UK to the basis for the Phoenix legend, they are pretty interesting birds. (although not sure I'd like the national bird to be compared to Poe's, The Raven)

Ya Know, I don't know if it's my paranoia or my cynicism that's getting the better of me but something about the timing of this "petition" stinks.

The current gov't is pulling off some pretty shady shit a la Bell and the DMCA.
Now, I've seen the Federal gov't use smokescreens before when they were trying to pull off some questionable shit that they KNOW the population is dead set against.

Whether you wanna believe it or not, the Meech LAke Accord was a smokescreen for a topic that Mulroney KNEW would get Canadians all inflamed and passionate. All this while he did an end run around us to stick us with the GST (or Free Trade, I can't remember now, it's been many years and bags of weed). Something he KNEW he wasn't going to be able to convince us was a good thing. Distract and deflect.

I can't help but wonder if "someone" called the society and "suggested" this as an idea.
Something that would generate a mild debate about something that really doesn't matter one bit while the Feds push through legislation they damn well KNOW we would NOT approve of. Distract and deflect.

I still say the Osprey though
