Not to try and make it a valid excuse (right you are there are none) But it is a fact, you, me Brenda, Benn ect..... at some poit while driving has probably made some mistake that has or could very easily have caused an accident.
I'm one of the lucky few that has never been in one (as a driver), but essentially every single vehicle accident out there can be attributed to human error, even mechanical failure causing an accident enevitably falls back on human error.

OnTheIce OnTheIce:
Benn Benn:

If he's a trucker he holds a higher class of license which says he knows better than most.

Yes, let's get real.

It's not a "higher class" of license, it's a different license saying that the driver is able to drive trucks over a certain length and with air brakes.

That doesn't mean he knows any "better" than any other driver on the road.

Truckers have much better training than private drivers. They should be, and mostly are, better drivers. But it doesn't mean that some of them don't get careless, just as private drivers do.

Actually he does, they are required to take whats called a pdic (professional drivers improvement course) that goes over regulations, laws, log books, safety standards, defensive driving. This course is effective to the point that Alberta will take demerit points off your license for taking it, they are also trained in said vehicles for quite a bit longer than the average driver before they are licensed to drive them.

Time will tell what happened.

All I know is all it took for me was one minor fender bender to realize I was piloting a potential lethal weapon from then on at a young age, luckily no one was hurt in my accident but easily someone could of been or worse. From that point on I drive defensively and make no assumptions about other drivers on the road except for one, I assume dey all stoopid.

Ok, maybe in BC. But I hold an emergency vehicle / Professional drivers license in Quebec and am pretty sure (95% sure) that Truckers have to study and are subjected to the same "extra" driving knowledge test that I took, plus the big rig stuff. Maybe it's different in BC. IMO if you are driving a potential weapon that size you should be taught and tested on how to drive better than most.

[Edit] I see Choban already made this point ;)

Bingo!

However Bodah, you don't have a choice but to think that way, you live across the river from the highest concentration of bad drivers in the country don't you? lol

Either way, it's nice to have laws banning the use of handheld devices, but there is no way to police said laws all the time. On my way home everyday I see people talking on cell phones and fiddling with their Blackberries and whatnot, and have seen the odd police car drive right past.

I've even been driving next to a car where I saw a Chinese guy steering with his knees while using both hands to eat a watermelon. I see women all the time in the mornings putting on makeup while driving.

Personally, I drive with one hand on the wheel in the mornings while my other holds my coffee mug, BUT, I am never distracted by my coffee. I don't answer my cell in the car nor do I make calls in the car.

Bottom line: People will still break the rules until a way can be found to better enforce said rules.

-J.
