Why should the school require her to remove her burkka in order to learn french, I would understand if she was having great difficulty but as for speaking in front of the class this shouldnt be an issue. Really this is much ado about nothing just let her keep the damn thing on and she should have to prove who she is for exams and that is it.
I know the school has stated it is for elocution and pronunciation but I dont think that is the real issue here and more about how we feel about about muslims/ arabs.

That is not an answer to my question. You claim the school has to understand her religious obligation. I wonder why the school has to understand anything?

Well I've been in biology class with girls swathed in sheets. Not Burkhas but some religious dress of a lot of layers of sheet clothing. The only concern we had was the fact we extensively used bunsen burners and open flame and copious amounts of billowing light clothing was a bit of a fire hazard.
Didn't bother them any and it didn't really bother us.

It has to do with the verbal exams and they have to be able to see her lips to help her with diction.

Just to say that I have followed this story here today.
It was not a regular "french course". It was the "french immigration course". The one you need to take when you immigrate here and you don't have enough knowledge of one of the official languages.
She was OBLIGATED to follow this course to be accepted by immigration canada.

Technically Brenda you are right the school doesnt have to do anything, but I was always raised that institutes of learning were not just limited to the curriculum but also taught tolerance to other cultures through those around us.

I do understand that Kenmore, I just think that it should only be a problem if she is having difficulty, but I have never attended school in Quebec and the only phrase I know in french is to ask a girl to sleep with me. So I am curious if she is having difficulty or are they just trying to maintain a standard? I think we need to hear more about this story

Adding to my previous post:
For those who understand french, it's a "cours de francisation". I think in the article they thought it was a "cours de francais".
"Francisation" means, "to push the person to understand french". It's not a good translation... Say you don't speak french nor english and you immigrate in Quebec, you have to follow "cours de francisation" before being accepted as an immigrant. They are quite basic but you still have to follow them to be admitted by Immigration Quebec/Canada.

Attended Catholic schools my entire life, grade 12 Religon revolved around other religons not just Catholicism, we learned about Buddhism, Judaism, Islam. Or was I lucky in this regard?

$1:
the only phrase I know in french is to ask a girl to sleep with me.
And even that comes from a song
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir
Hey sista, go sista, soul sista, go sista Hey sista, go sista, soul sista, go sista

But where there muslims in your school? Or even Atheists, who didn't have to pray? Because that is what it is about.
