Please elaborate....

Firefox, with the plugins 'NoScript', FlashBlock, AdBlock, Web Of Trust, and Stop Autoplay will keep you safe from most scripting hacks.

As for disconnecting your connection, it's no big deal. As usual, 'Sid doesn't know what he's saying. My Motorola modem even has a large button on top to do just that.

Hey Caleb shut your ass. I have been in the industry for 15, get off you high fucking horse and shut your mouth unless you have something helpful. I know exactly what im talking about. why don't you hit the button ever minute for a half hour and see what happens from your end and shaws.

Being 'in the industry' and 'knowing what you are saying' are two different things. You continually show you don't.

Please explain to the class why it's a bad thing to cut off your connection when you are not using it.

Actually it's not bad at all to turn off your modem when you are not using it.

Most vulnerabilities gain access to your system via your IP, others, once on your system, vulnerability or virus calls out to another system.

Turning you modem off while you're not online is basically the same as reseting your modem (or cycling) and in most cases renews your IP. (gives you a different IP, if your modem has been turned off long enough)

Nothing wrong with doing that and does not do any harm.

My techy friend told me about the disconecting the modem, wasn't sure if was worth doing. Thx for the info peeps.

As for Sid, instead of just telling people their "silly" & "bad idea", explaining why usually helps. Yes sometimes us non-techs will question your advice, not because we may not believe you but knowing why usually helps. But in this case looks like you dont know what your talking about, you may want to get recertified in MCSE.

Exactly. It's no different than shutting off your PC to save a little on power.

I've got a power bar that shuts off all those little vampires - my cell charger, playstation etc, and it shuts off my wireless router too. The wireless is the last DMZ point into my home network, so it becomes totally an internal network with that off.

If it's not powered on, it's not vulnerable to attack. But for some reason, Sid thinks it is a bad idea. I'm curious as to why he thinks that way.

HAHA ok lets clear something up

1. I never said your computer was going to blow up if you disco your modem.
2. Its a bad idea if you happen to be relying on your ip for anything and you havent been smart enough to get a static IP.
3. Its also a bad idea as if your modem is off for long enough or keeps reconnecting your provider may think there's something wrong. Shaw for example has a system that boots "trouble modems" into a queue to be watched over, hmm oh look now that modem is up and downloading at max capacity, hmmm what could he be doing. But hey if you like drawing attention to yourself then go right ahead, just dont do anything illegal like say oh i dunno download movies, music, games.

4. Although it takes a while, wear and tear is another great reason for leaving it be.
5. Also modems are very sensitive to power surges.

In the end its up to you what to do, some good security and your fine. So far today i have replaced three modems for people who were "disconnecting it at night". 2 broke off the cat 5 connector and one guy snapped the power plug in half. lol goofs

Yeah it is, you "god of tech" should know that the less a power supply is restarted the better, in general.

I dont steal, music, games, movies on line etc. I actually pay artists for their hard work. So I'm not worried, they can look at what I'm down loading all they want, its all legit.

Everything else you've mentioned doesn't apply to me. And you'd have to be a drunken chimpanzee to break off to start breaking cable parts while disconecting your modem, again not me.

P.S. I've heard of fires starting due to laptops overheating powered on left on beds, but they dont blow up.

Before saying "I didnt say this affected you" I will say, good on you for supporting them...seriously.

lol again not referring to you specifically but just posting reasons as asked

Yeah i ahve seen that lots. it covers up the exhaust spaces for the fans to blow out the hot air and people wonder why there laptop feels like its on fire after two hours on the bed.

In general, modems use transformers - not 'power supplies'. The 'wall wart' or 'bricks' are always on, unless unplugged. You don't 'restart' them. They draw voltage, and limit current in the most basic sense. They have no moving parts. There is no penalty to powering them off.

A properly designed switch mode power supply has no penalty for turning it off. A poorly designed one - yes, it will suffer from wear and tear and fail earlier. But you really have to buy the "made in someone's garage in China" kind of crap for that to matter.

But, like I said, my modem has a nice little button on top to disconnect it from the internet when I'm done for the day.

was actually referring to the PS for the computer, which does have moving parts. But yes it happens to the "made in someone's garage in China" crap lol
