gonavy47 gonavy47: Beej Beej: How about we make the GG head of state and change her title from GG to Queen. Sorry, I don't want a liberal appointee. Okay, then wait until he gets out of prison and nominate Conrad Black. He's a peer of the realm and he would make a great king.

Zipperfish Zipperfish: How much of my taxpayers dollars go towards supporting this medieval throwback and conservative shill. Let alone Federal land that basically is Queen property, in case the Germans invade the UK or something.

Although I do think you pay for security, accommadations and all the other paraphenalia that's included when they come over for a state visit. But hey, they have to be invited before they can come for a state visit. So they're our guests.

2Cdo 2Cdo: BartSimpson BartSimpson: Governor General calling herself 'head of state' riles monarchists And Hillary Clinton thought she was President from 1993-2001. No biggie. Was that when she was dodging sniper fire in Bosnia? So if we're going to pay for a head of state they might as well be Canadian, and since we already pay for the GG, well......

Beej Beej: How about we make the GG head of state and change her title from GG to Queen. How about we elect a GG from some candidates Parliament nominates, drop the pretense that the GG is NOT the de facto head of state (Bills don't get signed by the Queen anymore, do they? So why pretend the GG is the Monarch's representative)? And most important, don't give the GG any new powers. They just sign off Bills, shake hands and represent Canada in a non-political way. Unlike a goddam President. No Republican connotations. No power - avoids the American mistake of replacing a foreign despot with a native one. Don't even need a goddam Constitutional debacle to do that little bit. And time it all with The Queen's death or abdication. To avoid any disrespect or controversy. Unless you want to mint oval coins just to fit in Chucky's ears.

How about we just chuck the GGs position altogether. We've got a monarch, why do we need a representative for the House of Windsor in this day and age. We need something signed, just e mail Elizabeth or have a tele conference for throne speeches. Just like in Britain the PM comes after the Monarch.

gonavy47 gonavy47: The Queen is our head of state. If the Governor General is confused about her position, she should be replaced by someone who understands the job. best post on this thread. As far as the rest of it, what should we replace the GG and make a president with ? Justin Trudeau ? Mulroneys kids ? Diefenbakers ? Turner ? no thanks, I'll keep the Queen.

As far as I'm concerned, the GG should be someone who has retired from the armed forces, and has served with distinction. That would eliminate most politicians and their friends. A suggestion: Romeo Dallaire, or Lewis Mackenzie. These gentlemen have earned a position of honour. What did the present GG do before her appointment?

Romeo Dallaire....?
I'll have Lew MacKenzie but Romeo didn't serve anywhere with distinction.

EyeBrock EyeBrock: Romeo Dallaire....?
I'll have Lew MacKenzie but Romeo didn't serve anywhere with distinction. Romeo Dallaire had his hands tied in Rwanda, by both the UN and the Canadian government. He suffered immensly from the genocide that he could do nothing about, that was taking place before his very eyes. His long service to Canada was tainted by the shameful betrayal of the man, by the UN and his own government. His recommendations, and finally pleading for permission to have re-enforcements to act fell on deaf ears. Nobody had the moral courage and just plain balls at the UN to do anything about it. Romeo Dallaire suffered a nervous breakdown when he returned to Canada, as would anyone who witnessed the horrors of mass genocide. His long service to Canada should be rewarded, and the GG's position would fit very nicely.

His long service to Canada should be rewarded, and the GG's position would fit very nicely. This was his first real 'hot' mission. Before that he managed to zoom up the ranks by riding a desk instead of proving his command abilities in the field. In Rwanda he made a lot of mistakes that a more experienced officer wouldn't have. He was walking around unarmed for gods sake. He was not the right man for the job he was sent on. He basically fucked it up. I am not saying that he isn't a decent person, I’m sure he is. I am saying that he didn't serve with 'distinction', he just served. Lew McKenzie on the other hand, served with distinction.

I sat beside Romeo Dallaire on a flight from Toronto to Montreal (or Quebec City) a few years ago while he was writing his book. Quite a decent man and seemed very gracious. We spoke more about Canadian Military history than anything else and I didn't want to ask him about Rwanda unless he brought it up. Like most other "Civvies" I have no idea whether he did a good or bad job in that shitty situation in Rwanda, but from what I've read from serving members it appears he may have done a poor job. Regardless after we finally got our bags and parted ways, I thanked him for his service. He was here on a speaking engagement last week too.
