there's plenty of mixed marriages over here. However it is still pretty rare to see a caucasian girl with a Chinese guy.....something about Chinese mother in laws don't really appeal to Western women.

There are some serious clashes. What I think is funny are some of the kids who come over here to live with the grandparents for awhile. They were born and raised in the West with all of these wonderful stories about life in China. Some(OK most) are pretty let down and depressed when they get here. The crowds and the heat seem to be the big thing for them, after the school shock wears off, which is extremely traumatic for most western kids.

Okay, sorry Xeres, but to put Forrest on that list indicates a lot of Forrest Gump watching and very little reading of Civil War history. Despite being a Klan organizer, Forrest quickly quit when it became radical and violent. Any historian worth his salt knows that you have to put yourself into the time period you're studying and try to understand the prevailing beliefs and mores of the day. Post-bellum Southerners, fresh off a military ass-whipping, with 5 million newly freed slaves running loose around the countryside faced a genuine fear. ALL southern whites knew that their whole world had been changed, and was going to continue to change, with little of their own input influencing those changes. How would any Canadian feel if 5 million unemployed Hatians or Mexicans or Iraqis were suddenly set loose about Canada? How would we feel when the carpetbaggers rolled in? It's a tremendous mitigating factor in evaluating their conduct.

Nathan Bedford Forrest was a true genius and to cast him in with the likes of David Duke and George Wallace demonstrates little understanding of the man.

Like in all situations, none of us were there, including Obama so we can never tell what happeded nor should we pass judgement before the facts come out. Obama has taken the word of his friend over the cops and it's not hard to believe that a black professor who has a president who is the first Black President Jusy Might Have a bigger chip on his sholder than usual.

This was stupid. Dumb stupid and any politician who gets to that level should know better than to say something dumb like that. The problem is, the more he spins it, the bigger it gets. He needs to address that he spoke before he thought and get on with bigger things.

Good points. The lingering resentment in the South that still drives the Klan today can be traced right back to the disaster of the post 1864 Reconstruction. It's probably the bolloxed post-war period more than the actual loss of the War that still pisses Southerners off today. It's one of those incredible what-if? scenarios that's still fascinating to contemplate today. What if Lincoln hadn't been assassinated, won a third presidential term in 1868, and had guided Reconstruction with a firm but far fairer hand? Would Southern anger have been peacefully quelled? Would the radicalization and terrorism of the Klan after Bedford Forrest abandoned them have even occurred?

Like I said, it's fascinating to think about, considering that a well-executed "hearts and minds" strategy might have derailed the worst excesses of American racism.
