Eisensapper Eisensapper:
It shouldnt be taken out, but there isnt a point in raising a stink about it either.

Just playing devils advocate here:

If it shouldn't be taken out, then why shouldn't we raise a stink if it is? And can't we sing it AND discuss the meaning of it as well? It would probably give the kids a better learning experience if they actually get to sing the anthem after learning why they need to appreciate it.

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
Eisensapper Eisensapper:
It pisses me off to no end when you see some douchebag sitting down with his ball cap on slurping a beer while the anthem is playing at a hockey game.

Agreed.

I went to my first NHL game in Toronto where we played the Sens.
The two guys next to me were given their tickets as a benefit for their job.
They couldn't care less about anything, ignorant pricks.

I, obviously, stood up and belted out O Canada like only I can.
Almost in tears as the massive chorus...

Hockey games are beautiful.

I miss having O Canada in school and hearing that chorus everyday.

I love going to hockey games and singing the Anthem with the rest of the crowd, I love that when you watch on TV you can always hear a Canadian crowd singing it. My kids music teacher is Heather Liscano (she sings the Falmes anthems)and we always look forward to her singing.
I think this SHOULD absolutly be part of our childrens daily routine and they should also be taught about it instead of just singing it.
My 9 year old loves our anthem, he starts singing with his hat off every time he hears it, his school is also very creative with it, they have a recording of an acapella group singing it over the p.a. and even had them do it live at the school.

Brenda Brenda:
$1:
Annette Pollock has a grandson at the school and she also counts herself as among those upset about the kids' inability to sing the national anthem daily inside the classroom.

"He goes to hockey. It's pretty bad when you have to wait for hockey to teach him O Canada instead of in the schools," she said of her grandson.

OMG woman, overreact much?
They are not singing it every day anymore, it's not banned!

My kids don't sing O Canada every day either in school. I don't see why that is necessary anyway. They don't pray in school either. I bet they learn the anthem, but it is not a part of the "daily routine", and excuse me, having an 11 year old saying that "it reminds me of the troups that are all out there"... Is that REALLY what you want the anthem to be?

There cousin was a soldier who died in Afghanistan... The anthem reminds them of the troops serving in Afghanistan and there cousin who lost his life there. Yes that is what I want the anthem to be. It's suppose to be patriotic and make you feel that way about the country you belong to and the men and woman who sacrafice there lives to protect it and the citizens in it.

To adults, yes.
Do you really want a kid to think about death everyday in school? If a kid says this, isn't it taught at home enough?

Who said they were thinking about death? She said she was thinking about the soldiers aka remembering them. Isn't that what people want for the soldiers?

"We will always remember, unless we forget".

Is it wrong for them to WANT to remember there cousin and the other soldiers? Nope.

What I was responding to, was "gramma", who thought it was a disgrace that "her grandkid has to learn the Anthem at hockeypractice" now. THAT is utter bullshit. They just don't sing it EVERYDAY anymore. It is not completely banned.

I don't think it is healthy for an 11 year old, or any kid for that matter, to think about adult business every day. The military, soldiers, war and all the politics are adult matters, that kids brains cannot gasp the way we do.

I hear you on the overreaction bit, but perhaps as adults and educators we need to detract from that line of thinking when it comes to children and focus on the feelings of patriotism a national anthem should inspire.
My son is 9 and he doesn't think of troops in the field every time he hears the anthem.
