Sorry, but it's the south coast of BC, we don't get typical Canadian winters (at least we usually don't).

Oh the south coast of bc isnt in canada? Damn history books. Get a plough, end of story.

Is it better to have the ploughs and not need them? or to need them and not have them? and have everything shut down for a day or two?

Have you ever driven in Vancouver after a snowfall? Better still, try driving in NewWest or WhiteRock after a big dump of snow. You won't be going nowhere, with or without a snowshovel. On top of that, the last few weeks have broken all records.

As another Lower Mainlander I have to agree with those above who have coped with this. These last 2 weeks have been nuts, more accumulation of snow than any of us can rememebr seeing in that short of a time period. I was almost getting used to it a few days ago when it was just snow, but after slogging through the slush in the pouring rain to get to work this morning I can't wait for it to go the hell away. I hate phase 2 of Vancouver snow; warm up and rain like hell and turn it to mush. I just hope we don't see phase 3, which is suddenly get cold again and freeze the remaining slush and undrained water from the roads. The resulting ice is way worse than snow (as all the above who live here can agree to).

Edmonton does it the right way and all municipalities should follow their example, by keeping private operators on reserve with a retainer. It's a small price to pay for insurance.

Council adds $6.3M to Edmonton's snow-removal budget

Keeping 135 snowplow operators on retainer will raise property taxes by almost one per cent .
