BartSimpson BartSimpson: Eisensapper Eisensapper: The fact that they asked a man, who has been retired for over a decade, for his opinion shows this is just sensational journalism. I disagree. Asking a retiree for an informed opinion is SOP for media because, as you should know, anyone active duty will only have the opinion they're ordered to have. True, however, I think Sapper's point is that this guy retired eighteen years ago and his expertise has far less relevence now. Kinda like asking a steamer engineer to comment on an issue with diesels...

Again true, however, they either went with what they could get or they went with what they wanted.

Don't they keep up with current happenings? Depends. Also depends what they have access to.

There are way too many questions left unanswered in this story, all it says is that NIS was called in to investigate something, it doesnt mean something really bad happened, they could be looking for clarification.
For those who are saying someone that retired 15 years ago is in anyway a subject matter expert, I joined in 1993 and I still have issues keeping up with how things are changing, as there seem to be a major shift in SOP's about every 5 years.
Also with regards to NIS, they operate outside of the chain of command and report their findings to the Vice CDS, if there was any wrong doing, there will be no cover up and those responsible will be dealt with appropriately, even if it is done quietly.

lily lily: My journalist friend married a retired Colonel. Honestly, in 18 years since the guy retired, a lot has changed. Canada went from peacekeeping to warfighting and that is a massive change in policies, procedures, SOPs, and general military thinking. Hell, I'm still in and things are changing, sometimes rather dramatically. Anyway, my point is, don't talk to fighter pilots about submarines...

By the way, the retired LCol was a LCol of what? - they never said. Makes a difference.

Streaker Streaker:  Oh, I'm sure you wouldn't. It'll be interesting to see the details as they emerge. Just a quick question Streaker. Have you ever posted a positive story about the Canadian military?

I just want to know if he doesn't like the military or just some of the things that happen there. I can't recall him ever posting a story about the good that they do so I'm leaning towards him just not liking the military period. Which I think would be silly.
