bootlegga bootlegga: Like Martin said on TV, you can't expect the markets to rise forever. While you can't expect what will happen in the future, having a few bucks set aside gives you a cushion to deal with those unexpected crises that seem to occur every few years. Makes sense to me. As long as that cushion isn't disapearing via adscams etc...

Eisensapper Eisensapper: I see 4x ELAV III (engineer light armored vehicle) ...................... As well as these boots, I have only seen Generals wear these stupid things: Having no knowledge of what is, or what makes for good military material, I was wondering if you could comment on why each of these items is considered badly by our soldiers.

ELAV, just a few points I have gleaned from coworkers (again I have not used it so I cant speak from personal experience): No fire power- It is armed with a 7.62 machine gun, thats it. Mounted Blade - way to small to be of any real value so it just adds un needed weight and cost.
The only 'cool' thing about the ELAV is the RWS (remote weapons system), the machine gun can be controlled by joystick inside the vehicle. You still have to get outside to change the ammo or to go through your some of your IA (broken gun) drills.
Everyone I have talked to have told me they would much rather be in a LAV III then the ELAV, for those two main reasons. If you want more information I can get it for you though.
The boots: They are just plain stupid, they cost way more then your standard black combat boots and really dont provide any extra advantage. If the enemy is close enough to see your boots, having them CADPAT is not going to save you. My guess is someone in Ottawa thought they looked cool so they pushed to get them produced.

So, just a question, the ELAV III, is that the "Stryker" that they had talked about before?

Horses for courses...
I heard Martin on the radio yesterday and he still sounds like yesterdays man. Those huge, suprise surplusses year after year were over taxation and Canadians were sick of it, allong with everything else that caused them to lose the election.

The Striker is the American classification for the LAV Chassis with RWS (remote weapon system),
ELAV is a striker with a very small plow, and few odds and ends that are pretty useless.
LAV III is a striker with a 25mm turret
Coyote is a *edit*shorter LAV III with smaller wheels*edit*
Bison is not on a Striker Chassis but looks very similar to a striker, with out the RWS.

Eisensapper Eisensapper: How do you figure? Holds more, faster, easier to repair because of mod design. Better design vs roadside IED's. Can fit on a herc. Specs

fifeboy fifeboy: Thanks. Why the knife? The knife is a perfect example of a make work contract for a Canadian company. The knife is overpriced and is of poor quality. The Defense Minister caught flak from Liz May during the election because he did not renew the contract last year, he instead got a new contract with a Chinese supplier for a new knife. Chances are the new knife will be just as bad or worse, but at least we will be spending less for it. Personally I went out and bought my own knife, the gov issued knife just sits in my truck for when I need to open a package or cut tape on a box.

SpecsIED armor is on the LAV and Bisons in theater right now, so the IED thing doesn’t wash. By the specs they give on the web site the http://www.army-guide.com the LAV is 3km slower, much more narrow, and lighter. The big difference is the BOXER has a more efficient engine, it can go twice as far. From the pictures I can see the room inside is the same as the LAV. As for the easier to repair, I dont see anything that would make it easier or harder to repair from the LAV.

Eisensapper Eisensapper: IED armor is on the LAV and Bisons in theater right now, so the IED thing doesn’t wash. Non-sequitur. The Boxer was the 1st AFV designed from conception with IED's in mind the LAV III was not. KMW and Rheinmetall to Develop New Armored Multi Purpose Vehicl$1: The highly protected vehicle cell is an autonomous armoured steel structure with a spoor liner, while the reinforced undercarriage and reinforced cell structure offer optimum protection against landmines and IEDs. Moreover, add-on armour modules make sure that the various vehicle versions receive the required level of ballistic protection.
Drawing on past experience, the designers of the AMPV family have equipped the vehicles with a robust, high-performance running gear, independent wheel suspension, outstanding spring deflection and high ground clearance all specifically designed with military requirements in mind. These engineering principles are borrowed from the Boxer programme. Special combat wheels with run-flat tyres assure continued mobility even in critical situations.

The UpArmor mod on the LAV III looks just as formidable.

Any design modded after the fact is always going to be weaker then one designed from the onset.
