It is true Islamic culture is somewhat bizarre by our standards but the problem is there are people in Afghanistan who want to live under 800 year old barbaric laws and who are we to tell them different? When Layton stated "We should negotiate with the Taliban" I thought he was on glue,and now we have a British general saying the same thing as well as the war is unwinnable. As long as the Taliban has support among a good chunk of the population we can't win,a good example is Vietnam. The only way we can win is if the whole population want us to or if we shock them into submission and the later option isn't viable since we're not a society that would support mass murder performed by our forces. If we look at WW2 the Germans surrendered when they saw us not as their enemies but their liberators and Japan of course was shocked into submission(Two nuclear bombs can do that).

Unfortunately its a little tough to negotiate with people who think our western ideas are insane, and we think the same of them (refering to Islamic culture). Therefore, you either get out, or plan on being engaged for 20 or 30 years, and ultimately for what.
