Harper is no coward--I say this a liberal. I have a lot of respect for the man, partly because I was brought up to honour our Prime Minister, and I'm teaching my kids to do the same, and partly because I can accuse him of a lot of things, but backing down isn't one of them.

But yes, he does have an almost neurotic need to control the message. Not just during the lection, but since he's gained power. I think he sees the bureaucracy as his enemy (maybe the Conservatives are too used ot being in opposition and are having trouble adapting to power), so he regularly muzzles his top bureaucrats, and especially his scientists. He muzzles his own Ministers; everything must go through the his office (Privy Council). He can't control the press, but he certainly tries to control their access.

I don't buy it, Zipperfish.

First off, I was taught that honour and respect is earned. Harper has done nothing to earn either from me. In fact on the one issue I thought he might perform well, he has failed dismally.

Second of all, Harper has backed down from a lot of things, at least in public. Privatizing health care. Outlawing abortion. Banning gay marriage. Global warming denialism. Harper's position on those things wasn't popular, and most who have been watching him for a long time think he'll try to sneak them in the back door later, but he did back down.

Finally, hiding from the press and the public is generally considered political cowardice. It was under Martin, it was under Chretien, it was under Mulroney, and it was under Trudeau. You can toss Campbell, Turner and Clark in there as well.
