I have long believed that part of being a "conservative" is being respectful of religion. Or rather, to be more precise, being respectful of Christianity. Unlike Orlet, I am not offended when someone says that this is a "Christian nation." It is. America certainly is not a Muslim or Hindu or Buddhist nation. As a Jew, I am deeply grateful for this nation's Christian heritage. No nation on earth treats Jews better. While there are many reasons for this, I believe that Christianity is part of what makes America the great country that she is. And as a fervently patriotic American, I will support and defend this country's Christian heritage to my dying days.

Wonderful, take a look at any Islamic fundamentalist state to see the flip side. Our society is fluid and evolves with the passage of time to become a more welcoming place then in generations past. We enjoy many freedoms and benefits I'm sure some people wish they had.

Sorry, working, not much time. Instead of comparing us to the worst places on the planet, why not compare us to ourselves. The way we were say, 30 or 40 years ago.

Use any of the markers you like; divorce rates, teen pregnancy, youth crime, violent youth... ...how do you think we're doing in our march towards enlightenment?

Religion is a fine thing, but keep it to yourself. The instant you insist on telling others about your religion is the day your religion ceases to be a shield against sin and becomes a sword to strike down sinners, with guarenteed failing results for everyone.

That is the part where I lost all hope that it was a serious piece on secularism. First of Hitler was Catholic you only have to look at the "Gott Mit Uns" belt buckles to see. Second the fact that Stalin and Mao did not have a religion does not prove anything. Stalin and Mao both had dark hair, does that mean dark haired dictators are evil? Stalin and Mao did the things they did because of a socialist set of beliefs, not because they did not believe they were going to hell. Besides do you think that all of the people who followed them were atheists. It really is a stupid argument and I dont know why people bring it up.

Obviously everyone would run out and rape their neighbours and stab their grandmothers.

I, for one, question the integrity of anyone who argues that religion is the only thing we can rely on to prevent people from doing the most awful things imaginable - says more about them than it does atheists.

You should look at the studies where they add religions into that mix. What about same sex marrage, freedom of speech, universal equality.

Stats can only goes back 10 years, some spots are up some are down. I wouldn't blame childeren becoming violent because of lack of religious influences though.

The sister of my girlfriend back in highschool got knocked up by a hockey player living at their house for the season - he promptly went back to Thunder Bay or wherever the hell he was from to his parents because his family was "religious" and they couldn't have their underaged son with an illegitimate child. Not sure what "God" will have to say about that one, but that's irrelevant to the fact that she's stuck raising a child while trying to graduate from high school.

Anecdotal evidence, to be sure, but it sure does go against any notion that religion necessarily imparts morals that aren't available through other venues.

These arguments are just another sad case of people being generalised.

There are a lot of hard headed Christians out htere who are complete human garbage. The Evangelical set seems to make a point to be ignorant.

There are also many commited Christians I know personally who are amazing, loving, generous, humble people.

Sadly, the Liberal onslaught seems to forget other religeons and focus their hate on Judeo-Christianity. Easy targets, I guess. And politically correct targets.

Ideally, every asshole Christian/Muslim/Hindi would disappear. Along with every shithead Liberal.
