Humm I said forced rehab not prison for the addicted. Prision for the people selling or pushing the drugs.

Mandated treatment does not work, the addict has to be in a place for that....some never are. I believe traffickers need prison time, but they never will see it.

$1:
So now we need to give out free condoms in area where there are prositutes.

Already being done and has been for a very long time...its called harm reduction.

What are you a Hippie or what TG.

I am a Mental Health and Addictions worker, I was raised in the DTES, I have lost many a client, friends and family to addiction. I have brought back so many people from an OD death...I cant count anymore. Im no hippy...i actually just care about fellow human beings...What are you?

Forced rehab? Do you seriously think that would work?

So now we are growing from Drug addictions to hookers and booz. HIV/AIDS can be cought may differnt ways, but we are talking about drug addictions, not hookers and drunks who bed the easy bar whore.

How do you think most of them pay for their drugs?

Shit you definately are a women twisting words.

The topic that came from was the Johns bringing STD's back to the wife, now you are twisting it to the hookers selling themselves to buy drugs.

o.k. I give up.. just make Canada into a cesspool of drugs and prostituion, like Holland and have the government support all this negative behaviour at taxpayer expense.

I mean why try to fix the problem, society can't win RIGHT??

If that is the case, I commend you on your efforts in trying to clean up Hasting St.

Look, I think we both can agree on one thing. There is no immediate solution to the problem of drug addiction, AIDS/HIV or just irresponsible behaviour.

Until then any government program, regardless if it promots drug abuse or helps cure those who what to be clean.. is a necessity and a benefit to all.

This does not mean I agree with the programs in prinicipal, but agree every little attempt to keep one free of disease, or safe from abuse or harm, does help and is beneficial to all as a society.

No I have seen this being done.

Even some 15 years ago when I lived in Vancouver, there was a group handing out condoms around Nelson and Robson Street.

Even if its less dangerous...I don't see safe injection sites as a great idea. They're still doing heroin, they're still probably committing crimes to get money to buy heroin. Sure its safer that we aren't getting people ODing, but honestly, it doesn't bother me if a heroin addict ODs. It sounds heartless, but supporting people's habits is just as heartless, since you're basically nodding your head saying "Well, you're a fucking loss now, might as well make sure some innocent 2 year old doesn't pick one of those needles up."

If you ever come to Vancouver, I would be glad to show you what is in place and how addiction is just a symptom of something bigger. Addiction is not something one can give up easily, it is a release from a personal hell. Majority of addicts, have a mental health diagnosis, drugs help keep voices and hallucinations away...you can thank the government for shutting down institutions that help mental health and developmentally delayed individuals.

Insite does not promote drug use, the staff on site work very hard to get people into detox and treatment. To do that it takes time to develop a strong relationship with a client...addicts dont have much trust in systems. Most addicts have experienced lives of abuse and trauma, these areas need to be worked through and healed or the addiction will win in the end.

My offer stands...you come to Vancouver I will gladly answer any questions and show you what is out there in the way of services.

** I figured you were a republican

injection sites are a good idea..not only do they control the spread of disease from dirty needles that are usually thrown in parks or buses or public washrooms..it gives the addicts a place to go and get their fix..it also puts them in touch with health care workers and drug addiction counselors... for some it could be the beginning of kicking the habit.. its not all bad.. there are lots of success stories ...

I say we need to start killing off dealers. That'd scare the shit out of them and anybody who thinks of dealing that kind of shit.

(This isn't meant to be taken fully serious, though I do think most dealers are basically just as bad as the rapists and murderers of society)

well I agree with you commanderkai...but its one hell of an addiction.. I worked as a street nurse in Toronto and some got help and treatment and some died.. its the young kids who end up on the streets that is a cause for concern..
